I had a recent client who gained 55 pounds in the year after he quit smoking.

Although the situation is probably mirrored in the US where women have caught up to men, in both smoking and lung cancer rates, and where teenage girls are taking up smoking ostensibly to stay thin. Same is the case in UK.

The average French women is 5-3 138. The average American woman is 5-4 164.

The average French man is 5-7.5 171. The average American man is 5-9.5 191.

Maybe we shouldn't be looking to model anything after the French.

The "average Frenchman" is overweight (BMI = 26.4)
The "average French génisse" is BARELY normal weight (BMI = 24.4)

Well, yes, there is that. But you have to remember that whenever people stop, they gain 4.5 to 9 pounds.

Wow..

I have read that smoking can cut 10% from your life span...

So, for the french... they could theoretically add 10% life from quitting smoking, AND an additional 5% from becoming fat! The average for France is currently in the low 80's... The could push into the 90's EASILY!

This is assuming that all French smoke, which I honestly don't know if they do or don't... and that that all French are thin, which they are not. OOPS!
