The NCAA should have to reorganize its enforcement practices, but in no way should scUM be cleared from any wrong doing and from any punishment.

Miami deserves the death penalty. It's the only way to end their long standing culture of corruption in their athletics department. The NCAA will not give them the death penalty, but they will punish even if on a delayed basis.

Agreed that Miami needs a beat down regardless of investigation screw ups.
Just goes to show how pathetic the enforcement arm of the NCAA really is.

I think the days of the NCAA having absolute power may be over. Their history of selective punishments and unchecked authority have made them a running joke in the sports arena. Just look at what Goodell is going through in the NFL with the Saints bounty case. If the NCAA were to hammer UM right now, they would take that case to federal court and have a TON of ammunition to fight it. Just a couple weeks ago Penn St filed a lawsuit challenging their rulings. You dont think this might come up in those discussions. To be as heavy-handed as the NCAA chooses to be at times, they have to be completely air tight in their procedures and documentation. IMO, they are not only failing in both categories, they are on the verge of completely inept at times. They seem to dole out punishments on emotion and/or favoritism. What may get one school the death penalty, will get another school minor sanctions. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to how they operate. They've always had issues with bowl committees taking kickbacks, and I believe have even been found with their hands in the cookier jar. But it never spilled over into the investigations side of the business. Until now. And now that they have acknowledged that they were less than ethical in their investigations, look for them to be rigorously challenged on their future cases. There is just too much money involved not to.

Let me get this straight. The NCAA is perfectly happy to use Louis Freh's investigation of Penn State to accomplish a swift rush to judgment and penalty in a case connected to the actual football program (facilities, head coach, current and former assistants) - but not involving players, inducements, or other rules violations in a very unusual and tragically horrific case.

But the NCAA is having an internal hissy fit because their staff obtained information from a sworn deposition that was helpful to a 2-year investigation into wide-scale and severe violations of rules that directly involved active players, head coaches and assistants? They overstepped their bounds, but this isn't a self-incrimination in a court of law. Pay a settlement - if necessary - and move on.

Can we add this to the "most bizarre sports stories" thread?

Due process is critically important. But why should the NCAA blind itself to facts, regardless of how they got them? As long as Miami has a fair chance to answer the allegations, I don't understand how or why the alleged impropriety in the investigation should void consequences. And why not have all athletes, coaches & administrators sign an agreement to sworn depositions in NCAA enforcement proceedings? Is it no longer legal to compel people to tell the truth when it isn't self-incriminating?

And why must this take years and years to accomplish? Dumb.

No. They broke the rules. They need to face the same punishment anyone else would. If USC took the kind if scholarship reductions they did over Reggie Bush, Miami deserves much worse with all the players who were involved in this.

I'm not going to say that some Miami players didn't get high with criminals on yachts, or take a few liberties with their female party guests. They did.
But can you really blame a whole University for a few misbehaved players?
For if you do, then I'd charge there are such players at all Universities.
And if all Universities are to blame, then isn't this an indictment of our entire American society?
Well, you can punish Miami any way you want, but Dennis Dodd isn't going to sit here and listen to you bad mouth the United States of America.

I just don't understand how the NCAA continues to get so many things wrong.

These fools might as well just give up trying to investigate or police anything. They didn't need to do what they did. They had it. They had all they needed without it but they were scared if it wasn't air tight they would face getting sued again.

Which is the other problem the NCAA is having in today's society. Even when they do good work and make solid decisions, they get challenged in court and end up having to spend a lot of money and resources to defend its decisions.

The NCAA need to be disbanded or, at the very least, out source a motgage or financial fraud company to start doing their investigations. Those people could have had bin Laden found in 3 days.

It's sad UM is going to walk. Great lesson learned by all.

Amazing that the ncaa can't enforce its own rules with Miami but can punish Penn state for violating rules they never had.

This whole thing is garbage. The NCAA did nothing wrong.

The thugs will walk because the fix is in and the media/pop culture/political connections of scum rose up, backlashed against the NCAA and set this up.

The u... the WHOLE SCHOOL... should be shut down and donna shalala should be living under an overpass with her girlfriend of the moment.
