Teo is gay and this Tuiasosopo is probably his boyfriend. Thats why they spent hours on the phone together and why he made up this hoax about having a girlfriend. I never believed it was about the Heisman. I actually feel sorry for the guy. It must be a difficult situation to be in.
I'm beginning to believe this now. He's in a situation that it's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't when it comes to presenting all the facts.
This is what happens when one lie leads to another lie and then multiple lies begin to spiral out of control.
NFL draft day is coming up soon and if he comes out of the closet now teams will hold it against him and pass on him.
Two cousins, a male and female, were alledgedly involved also and posing as brother and sister to Lennay and placing the phone by her ear when she was in a coma. Tuiasisopo had pulled the hoax before.
This just in - there was no such person as "Knute Rockne" - he was invented by the ND publicity office - and the Four Horsemen were women.

I honestly would find it easier to believe Te'o if he came out and admitted to sending money to some Nigerian banker who was holding a fortune some long lost relative had left him in a will found in some tribal area in the Kalahari.
This story--fake gf...coma and could only breathe over phone for hours....met her at a game, then didn't meet her....yeah, right.
Note to Te'o---please send me good faith money along with the bank routhing number, acct number and your SS# so I can deposit the $27,000,000 to your bank account via the Bank of London. Your expedient reply is gratefully acknowledged and may god bless you for your troubles.

I wonder if they were having phone sex and how he pulled that off.
Yeah I'm starting to see this whole story differently. Something doesn't past the sniff test that he was duped
First he fell in love with a girl he supposedly met at a football game but never saw again. Now he was fooled into believing that he was talking to a woman on the phone for hours at a time. Please tell me people don't really believe he is that naive...please???

Count me in as one who now just officially feels bad for Manti. I believe he thought it was a real girl. I believe he is embarrassed and if it's true that he held on to a phone girlfriend because he is gay, I personally don't care.
I just think he's a young kid in an a social networking era and he made a few mistakes here. The person that should be demonized was his ex-"friend" who was probably just jealous of him.
This story is just fodder for the feeble minded. I'm out.
There is a video on the NY post of Manti hugging his tormenter after the USC game in November of this year. That must be how the hoaxster got so good at fooling Manti. He already knew what Manti was into.
"TMZ has obtained footage showing Manti Te'o hugging Ronaiah Tuiasosopo -- the man who allegedly masterminded the fake girlfriend hoax on the Notre Dame football star -- and it's pretty obvious from the tape ... Ronaiah wanted to hug Manti A LOT more than Manti wanted to hug him.
The video was shot in L.A. back in November on the same night Notre Dame played USC -- before the hoax was exposed -- and it offers a pretty fascinating glimpse into Manti and Ronaiah's relationship before this whole thing blew up.
In the footage, you can see the two were having a conversation before they each go in for a hug at the same time. But when Manti gives Ronaiah the "it's time to let go" pat on the back, Ronny continues to hold the squeeze.
Manti recently told ESPN ... he knew of Ronaiah during the hoax because his imaginary GF "Lennay Kekua" told him Ronaiah was her "favorite cousin." Manti said he had never seen Ronaiah in person before the USC game.
FYI -- The USC vs. ND game was the same day Ronaiah allegedly duped a Notre Dame superfan into meeting Lennay's fake sister U'ilani at the Tommy Trojan statue near the stadium. When the fan arrived, U'ilani wasn't there ... but Ronaiah sure was."
That is what I initially thought too. However, my wife, upon hearing this story, immediately said that he was "catfished" and it is far more common than you would ever believe. I, personally, would never be so gullible, but then again, I did not grow up with all of the on-line dating and social media things either. I think that if you are not that socially comfortable in person (as Manti seems to me), you may be able to "fall" for someone on-line. I believe 90% of his story.

It supposedly went on for 3 years? Kids would not carry out a prank for that long given short attention spans. Or is the timeframe a lie too?

Which all leads to my personal theory of this guy being jealous and wanting to somehow be in Manti's life. Manti drank the BS Kool-Aid and found himself in a compromising, embarrassing situation.
I doubt Teo was that gullible. Teo could have had a real Lennay. He didnt need this cyber romance let alone have to lie in interviews to make it sound more believable. Im willing to bet your roommate didnt have as a many options as Teo has. If Teo lied through his teeth on TV why should we believe the rest of his outlandish story?
Te'o was quite the ladies man on campus according to many people who went to ND or were on the football team, so pretty sure he made the most of his options when he thought he was single.
But no--my old roommate had no game, so you pegged that. He was a Buckeye alum though, so came with the territory..
As far as your other question--about the only thing I can speculate on is that Te'o probably knew how silly it sounded and didn't want to look like an idiot. First in front of his friends/family--then, the media when people started asking.
