How many of those who vote for Charlie actually have a job that is not with local, state or federal government? That is how.

Intolerance by any other name as mentioned in my Clinton thread regarding his recent guns and fishing comment, which was similar to Obama's "cling" comment during his first campaign in PA.

Lincoln should have let Thaddeus Stevens & Charles Sumner have a free hand in 1866.

Haha. Nice catch. Stevens should have told Lincoln not to go to the theater in 1865. Or finished the job with ousting Andrew Johnson.

He (or his agenda) were better off with Johnson. Lincoln would have made the radical (R)s very unhappy with his approach, IMO, and swung a big enough bat to make it happen. Johnson was his own undoing and by the end of his term the RRs had carte blanche to do whatever they wanted. Ironically, it was Grant and the corporate interests that took the teeth out of Reconstruction.

Stevens and other RRs wanted to confiscate land and redistribute it (not to mention hanging a bunch of people). They really didnt get carte blanche on everything, other than on questions of basic black citizenship. Lincoln and Johnson were both obstacles to the RR agenda. The only difference is that Stevens had a measure of respect for Lincoln, and Lincon knew how to contain Stevens' worst impulses.

My point. Nobody was in a position to stop Lincoln or his agenda(s) in 1865. Probably a good thing there was gridlock for the first couple years, IMO. Not sure redistribution of land, hangings would have been a good thing. Jesus, the South is still bitter over the Civil War in many respects. IMO (and I'm thinking Lincoln would concur), that kind of policy would have led us to another Civil War.

It would have broken the big-agriculture / plantation power structure of the South, and made everyone free small landholders instead of tennant farmers/sharecroppers. Sounds nice, but its only a "what if" that sounds better than the racial violence and terror which plagued the South until Jim Crow fell. Who knows how that "what if" would have played out. There's always the possibility it could have been worse, I suppose. It would have been radical no doubt, given Constitutional protections of property.

I'll leave it at this. Retribution was NEVER part of Lincoln's agenda. Ironically, Booth was about the worst thing that could have happened to the South. On that note, I'm not sure that Lincoln's "carrot" philosophy may have reaped more dividends with respect to equality and Jim Crow than the approach that was eventually taken. It's hard, even in hindsight, to doubt that man's judgement.

I lived in Boston for eight years. It's a beautiful city, but talk about bigoted. They are bigoted against minorities and against the South for being bigoted against minorities. I didn't go a day without hearing an anti-South joke and I had many friends that literally would not go south of DC because they thought they'd end up in a Deliverance situation.

And therein lies the real culture change that needs to happen in this country. That crook, the many more like him in Washington and their accomplices need to look in the mirror.

IMO (and I'm thinking Lincoln would concur), that kind of policy would have led us to another Civil War.
Yes, What happened to "with malice toward none, with charity for all" and the generous surrender agreements of Grant and Sherman

Yeah, to hear the Left tell it you'd think all bigots are Southern Conservatives. No racists to be found among those working class union-hack types up North, no sir! Spike Lee never experienced racism in the Democratic stronghold of Brooklyn. He had to come down South to find out it existed. That movie Do The Right Thing was total fiction.

P.S. None of the white Democrats who voted against 0bama in the primaries were motivated by racism, but everyone who voted against him in the general election was.

Rangel would piss off a lot of folks if he was successful at getting rid of collard greens, water melons, fried chicken and boiled peanuts.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president." Author Unknown
