He didn't come clean; he's just doing damage control. Why didn't he come clean many months earlier when the media reported that he met her after the Stanford game, that she woud visit him in Hawaii, and that he would stay on the phone with her all night to comfort her? He knew all of that was false; she didn't exist. How could he be "committed" to someone he had never met? Rubbish.

To me its pretty simple, he is stupid and gullible and lied about the relationship the entire time. I dont think he was in on the hoax but he knew it was ridiculous to be in a relationship with a person he had never met. So he lied about it for years. He has lied about it so much that even now he talks about Lennay like she was real. He is obviously delusional, gullible, naive and able to believe in fantasy as reality.

If I am an NFL team between this and his performance in the BCS game I dont touch this guy.

I wouldn't draft him on the sole basis of his performance on the field during the NCG. For the first time all season he got to play against an "NFL caliber" TEAM and was made to look silly.

I have grown so tired of this story and it happened about a day after it broke. Could you imagine how many more highlights they could show on sportscenter if they didnt waste so much time covering stupid crap like this that doesn't matter ?

Just saw on sportscenter that he had over 1000 calls to her area code in 4 months, 660 to her number, and 110 over an hour long.

That's 9 calls a day with at least 1 being over an hour a day.

What a weirdo.

James Laurinaitis looked pretty inept against Florida and LSU in back to back national championship games--and has managed to do well in the NFL.

One game does not make a season. Plus, Te'o had pretty good games against both Oklahoma and Stanford in the regular season--both of whom have significant "NFL caliber" talent on their rosters.

If anything, Te'o's performance in the national championship game makes a bit more sense now considering he knew he'd have to face the music sooner or later and it obviously took away his mental focus in preparing for the game.

Laurinaitis's career is not what I'd call top 10. Perhaps I misspoke when said "wouldn't draft him. Meant would be a top 10 pick IMO." also see : TEAM in caps.

Yup. He's definitely naive and more than a bit stupid for being that gullible.

This kinda reminds me of my law school roommate who had met a girl from Canada online--was all smitten because they got along real well, claimed they'd met up over the summer, etc...she came to visit and it became clear that the pictures she'd been using were ridiculously out-dated; she was far older than she said she was; and--they'd never actually met over the course of that summer, he was meeting her for the first time when she came to Florida to visit.

The girl ended up being a total psycho and ended up going home early after both of us essentially kicked her out of the place and told her she needed to stay in a hotel (yes, she really was that bad). You better believe I gave him sh*t about it for MONTHS afterwards--and even today, still find reason to crack on him.

Needless to say though, I've seen it happen on a smaller scale. Doesn't excuse Te'o's actions in the slightest and he's going to deservedly be mocked for quite some time, but hopefully he learns from it.
