This gets overblown all the time and for some reason people like to take the exception and make it the rule.
If you are a true college football fan you have a stack of preseason mags going back at least 10 years in your bathroom.
Go take a look for yourself and you will find a better than 50% chance of 5 stars making it in college and probably 25% making a name in the nfl.
So yes, not every 5 star is great but the hit rate on them is much higher than 3 or 2 stars.
Sorry, it is just that simple

John went to the wrong school for his skill set or at least at the wrong time.

Someone is terribly mistaken if they think that Leak underperformed as a Gator. He was brought in as a pro-style QB, who had to deal with numerous different OC's, including one who forced him to basically relearn his entire skillset...you know, kind of how they tried to do with Tebow in the NFL.
Leak lived up to the billing and more, never complained, and was a true leader and Gator. Be honest, do you think Tebow would've had those crazy numbers under Zaunbraucher, fedora, and whoever else worked under Zook?

I agree with this. Meyer, which I was cool with not that it mattered, went after the most highly regarded stars he could regardless of skill set. John would've been a better player at Texas IMO.

Well at least if Brantley had gone to UGA it would have fit his skill set...
...and it would make sense of the disgusting way some Gator fans speak of him.

Starvers ranking is probably about right but he has a lot of physical tools to work with strong arm and great frame. He has some mechanical issues and decision making to work on. We will find a decent starter out of Mournhinweg Starver and Grier.

I absolutely love how GatorAZ is the voice of reason. :-) Bottom line is that we had to have a QB in this class to provide depth. We missed out on a couple of top shelf players, but the coaches have probably known for a while the they'd get Grier and they REALLY wanted him. So they get a "solid" player who will provide depth for a few years, obviously won't scare Grier in the least, and may just end up helping swing Ramsey to UF. He sounds perfect for what we needed in this class.

I don't really consider it missing on Targets when the coaches knew who they wanted the whole time. It's almost a slap to the face of Staver when we say that or mention that we got Grier coming in so we will be ok.

Tough to say for sure. Garrett Gilbert was a 5-star dropback kid, too, and he ended up transferring from UT to SMU.

Who is this Starver guy people keep talking about?
IDK about Starver. But Max Staver... big, fast, strong arm, quick release, and the coaches like him. That's something to work with.

Staver can make any throw you could want. He's not as polished by any means. But with good coaching and practice he could blow up into something good. He's got the talent and ability. He needs the coaching to harness it all.

He's had a steady but less than stellar tenure with SMU. Funny though, as a freshman, he had Bama peeing in its pants. He literally dominated that game for good or ill.

Chris Leak underperformed? Isn't our all time leader in passing yards?

Absolutely, which is why the news of his transfer really shocked me.

Staver has the physical tools to be a big time QB the question is can he put it all together.
I dont get this Mornhinweg was personally recruited by Pease thing. It was the end of the cycle and they had limited choices.

Yea Asiantii for not being a QB for long is actually pretty legit. He's got pretty good mechanics, and Staver has a big time arm too. All I can say is there will be great QB battles in the near future.

What other options did he really have? Folks were putting Brantley up as a Heisman contender going into 2010 remember? It almost seemed like Meyer was forced to play Brantley, because you could definitely tell that he was frustrated with his play almost every game, and even used our TE and a Hybrid player to play the QB position.

Tim
Danny
Rex
Shane
Chris
Wayne
Kerwin
Doug
Jesse
John

I would put Chris ahead of Rex.
If Chris played for SOS, he would have put up much better numbers. When Rex played for Zook & Zaun, he was not nearly the QB he was under SOS.
Chris won a national championship, and he was a very solid QB for us.

Take away the shuffle pass yardage, and what it did for his stats, and CL was just a guy. Thankfully, he and a few others played the games of their lives in AZ. Grossman on the other hand probably deserved the Heisman his Soph year. The OL in his Jr year wasn't very good and he spent the year getting up off the turf. Then the Zoom dumpster fire engulfed the program.
