Question For Piano Players

Potentially. This depends upon whether there is a another instrument (vocalist or instrumentalist) involved). At some point, however, the pianist is going to need that note. Not all songs remain in one key, though, so there is a reasonable chance that note would be called for. For example, a song that is in Ab might include a Bb7 chord, which includes the D. The D is not in the key sig, but might be necessary in the tune.

Ok, here is the scenario. and once again I do not have or own a piano.

I am writing a story that includes a scene of a poor family, out in the sticks, that has a piano with a few of the white keys missing.

Their daughter is a budding child prodigy who can only practice on that piano. They have no money to get it fixed.

So...lets say she is playing a piece from Bach. How can she adapt to not having those 1, 2 notes available?

She's a prodigy, she'll figure it out!

Hey, maybe you can give her a Guitar too without the D string to see if she can figure out how to play Stairway to Heaven without it. I wonder how that would sound? Or remove the E strings and have her try to play "Bouree in E minor" anyway. That would be funny too.

Maybe she can make a "La" noise when she hits the D key or maybe she can play an octave higher. If you stick around in the pub long enough we can write the book for you, think it'll be a fun project for the pubsters. If there's kissin cuzzins involved in them thar woods there's probably a bunch of people in the pub that could give you some material.

Is she playing Bach's Toccata? One of my favs.
