1941 National Championship- This is a complete joke. The AP ranked Alabama 20th in the nation with 14 teams with better records in the top 20. Once again it is the Football Thesaurus that retroactively awards it. Alabama finished 3rd in the SEC that year. Mississippi State won the SEC title..yet Bama claims a National title!

Wow.

I'd imagine we could get close to double digits. More than that if we count all of our teams that finished in the top 20.

There used to be an Auburn poster on here who several years ago, posted a complete and logical breakdown on the claimed Gump titles. I think it is something every Auburn fan knows in their sleep, but in all seriousness it made lots of sense. At the time, Bama was claiming 12 NC while after dismissing the completely moronic titles they claim, a more realistic number should have been around 7 or possibly 8....at that time.
You just can NOT find a real Gump fan however who will seriously accept using a more consistent manner in which to honor Bama with a realistic number of titles. In their minds--they SERIOUSLY believe they are at 15 and counting. There is no room for discussion whatsoever in their view.

It would be fun to see all the schools that count national titles and see how many it equals. I bet it would be at least 50-60 higher than the number of years college football has been played

Read the article I linked about 1941. It raises some interesting points. Still, I think they should relinquish that one.
PS The obvious answer to this thread is "inbreeding."

Perhaps the worst was in 1941, when "Football Thesaurus" (who had to be getting paid by the Tide) awarded a retroactive title to Bama despite Bama finishing 20th in the AP Poll that year. Geeeeesh.

That is not accurate, Bama was ranked #1 at the time under the Houlgate System, which had awarded MNC's from 1927 onwards. So it was at least in existence at the the time, although they didn't count it until 1983 in their media guide.
