Likely Oscar Nominees for Best Picture
According to EW…
1. Lincoln
2. Zero Dark Thirty
3. Les Misérables
4. Argo
5. Life of Pi
6. Silver Linings Playbook
7. Amour
8. Beasts of the Southern Wild
9. Moonrise Kingdom
10. Skyfall
I like the list. Seen four of these films, Zero Dark Thirty, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Moonrise Kingdom and Skyfall, plan on seeing all except possibly Les Mis and Silver Linings Play Book. Been wanting to see Amour since June, but it just opened in the US. That will probably win best Foreign Language Film. Unusual that it is even nominated for Best Picture.
Thoughts?

They missed on a couple. Neither Moonrise Kingdom nor Skyfall got Best Picture nominations. Djaingo Unchained did. There were only nine nominations. Skyfall got a lot of other nominations and will probably win best original song. Moonrise Kingdom got nominated for best original screenplay. That'll be interesting. If it wins, I think it will be the first time two siblings have won an Oscar, plus that will add to the ridiculous number of Oscars for three generations of Coppolas.

No offense to the OP, but the Oscars are meaningless to me. Every film influences and affects individuals differently. How can a committee decide which is best for the rest of us? My feelings on this is the same for all other judged and/or voted on award ceremonies or competitions.

I would agree the the Academy Awards are not the most astutely judged shows or festivals, but I would say that them along with the better festivals do a good job of narrowing down important films, the ones most likely to be historically significant. There are too many movies being released all the time, then eventually going to Netflix, Redbox, various pay-per-view services, cable or whatever. Most of them are crap, made just to attract a specific audience and make a profit. If it weren't for awards shows/film festivals, film critics and theorists, it would be impossible to sort out the films that told great stories, or made important statements. Down the line, the perennial award winners become a known entity. We know when a David O. Russell film comes out, it's probably worth seeing.
The committee doesn't decide what is best for everyone to see. They decide what films were well made, breaking it down craft by craft. They tell us what films are most worth seeing. The show itself is a good forum for educating the audience about film, the history, the technical details, etc.
Cannes, Sundance, the Toronto and New York Film festivals have more artistic merit and much more astute juries, but those things go on for days. You can't televise them. I like to read about the winners to get a head's up for what's coming. By the time the Oscars come around, most of the films are no longer in theatrical release.
If you don't pay attention to at least some of this stuff, at least the critics, you end up getting suckered into seeing bad movies that are well marketed.

Moonrise Kingdom is the biggest "snub" to me. I thought it was the best movie I saw all year. Django Unchained was a close second.

It was my favorite movie and I thought it should have received more awards than it did, but I think there's this idea that Best Picture nominees have to be "Substantial" and Moonrise Kingdom was light as a feather. That's what made it great and why I enjoyed it over and over again. Very glad that Anderson and Coppola got the writing nomination. Mark Boal will probably win for Zero Dark Thirty. It's a crime that the Moonrise Kingdom wasn't nominated for Best Production Design. I thought the soundtrack was brilliant and maybe the best use of music in any film I saw this year. The problem with that soundtrack is that very little of it was original music.
IMHO, the biggest snub was Kathryn Bigelow not getting nominated for Best Director.
Always thought that editing was a weird thing to give awards for. Even editors agree. Nowhere else are editors given awards for their craft. That said, Moonrise Kingdom should have been nominated. That montage that begins when the girl is discovered to be missing where they go back and forth between their families and them writing each other notes planning their escapes is a little masterpiece. Check it out here…

It didn't get a Best Picture nomination, but I would strongly disagree about it being terrible. It was the best Bond movie ever and a great film by any standards, just very different from any Bond movie. Glad to see that it did get quite a few nominations. Adele is a shoe in for Best Original Song. I also think Roger Deakins has a great chance of winning for Best Cinematography. Doubt he will care. He's been nominated 11 times. Would like for Daniel Craig to have been nominated for Best Actor, but I can't quibble with the people who were nominated.

I saw Les Mis with my daughter..She liked it. I tolerated it simply because I dislike singing in place of simple dialogue. I thought the acting was good. I saw Skyfall, it was OK. I want to see Silver Linings Playbook as it is essentially about mental illness, an interest of mine. I hear it is also funny in parts..I also would like to see Lincoln.. The rest on the list I don't know enough about to really comment on. Did you like Zero Dark Thirty?

Seriously. What was terrible about that movie? I haven't enjoyed a Bond movie so much in decades.
