Oreo comment notwithstanding, I loved Lombardi too (I wonder what he's doing since the LSU system let him go?). But Machen has been good for us.

We do not need Machen and his overbearing rude personality to do this. Its a shame if its true he is staying.

Exactly. Came in like he owned the place and we were just a bunch of hicks. Worst president in the current history of UF.

My bad. I must be up on recent nomenclature for our UF leaders. It seemed to fit Machen. Needless to say, I am not a fan.

I heard that he wanted to spend more time with his family and he was having significant health issues, so he was stepping away -- something about sphincteral spasms. But he said if he ever comes back to academia, there's no way he would throw some other school's colors on his regalia and be president anywhere else.
Privately, he referred to UF as a broken institution.

Steve needed to be disrespected for that dumb statement. That trophy case didn't make you King, Steve, it simply said you were a good employee. One that obviously didn't need to be re-hired.
Machen and Foley really protected U.F. *from* U.F. at that time

1) Search committee could not identify high quality finalists willing to take the job
2) Machen had a change of heart and used back-channels to make it known to those in charge that he wanted to stay.
3) Machen never really want to quit in the first place, using his retirement as leverage to get additional power and/or resources from the governor.
4) Power that be in the search didn't want to risk a new president, given the political landscape and the strength of certain other presidents (i.e., Hitt) in the SUS.
Anyone in Hogtown got any real insight on this?

It's #3. The Governor was blocking Machen's plans to make UF an elite university and seperate it from the pack of our other state universites. Scott has now made concessions and cut a deal with Bernie. This is great news for UF.

Spurrier never inferred he was king. And he was more than a "good" employee. he is all gator and his achievements don't need to be scribed on a resume and he shouldn't have to go through some politically correct "process". If they weren't interested from the start tell him and move on. Machen is a bureaucrat first and foremost, and his opinion of himself far outweighs reality. IMHO. He hasn't done much good in Gainesville. I hope he finds greener pastures
