There was a reference once on a show about the 9/12 terrorists watching TV on 9/11. Macabre is an understatement. I do like his digs at Michael McDonald as the guy "who ruined the Doobie Brothers" though.

I'll guarantee you that if any of you had a family member with this chromosomal condition you wouldn't find it funny. My brother-in-law has a Down's Syndrome child.

I agree, don't see it as funny either, my uncle had down's syndrome, and I would punch somebody in the throat if they made fun of him

Apparently we rejected his admissions application at some point. We'll rue the day!

MacFarlane hates Down Syndrome children. He won't let up on them.

The writers don't actually think UF is a bad school, nor do they think Brown is a bad school. It's only a joke.

Later in the episode, the whole family is accidentally launched in the space shuttle. Peter remarks "if that's what it takes to get out of Florida."
The earlier episode wasn't making fun of Downs as much as making fun of how "normal" people react. And Macfarlane insults everyone, so why is any group safe?
Folks here (and other sites) made fun of Herschel Walker when he revealed he was diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. Guess the joke is funny until it touches a little too close to home.

Agree that people are too touchy.
The comments were in poor taste, but as you note, they insult anyone and everyone on that show.
People need to lighten up. Or not watch the show if you get that easily offended.

I don't like the down's syndrome reference and even if that was okay the joke just fell flat because UF is a highly ranked school. Maybe a joke related to "jorts" or "fat armed girls" or "everyone being drunk" or anything else we've been accused of, but that was lame.
Not the same level of course, but similar to making the same joke about Harvard. There were plenty of jokes to be had but it sounds like he was too lazy to make it relevant and he figured a lot of his audience wouldn't know UF's reputation.
More likely, he didn't have a clue and associated FSU's rep with ours.

They made a pedophile and holocaust joke (as well as the UF joke) all in the first 10 mins of the show.
So, obviously, nothing's sacred on this show.
You don't have to like it. It probably is insensitive.
But I happen to think it's funny.
To each his own.

Family Guy writers would probably get a kick to know it offended people. I'm convinced that's part of their mantra...
Personally, I love the show. Maybe I'm comically shallow?

I'm not offended, I just understand the joke. It comes off as incredibly lazy.

Therein defines much of the show's humour... it's the gem or two that comes out each episode that puts it over the top

Definitely one of the laziest written shows on television. I thought only high school students liked it, was horrified to find otherwise. A reference does not constitute a joke.
That said, I take no offense to my school being the butt of a joke every now and then.

I do not know why anyone over 16 wastes their time watching Family Guy, bevis and butthead, or south park.

While all three are juvenile, Beavis and Butthead and South Park are or have been legitimately clever, smart and actually funny. Their writers are legitimately funny. The same cannot be said for Family Guy and Seth McFarlane, although he does seem like a nice dude.

Agree that South Park writers are more clever and creative. Never watched a lot of Beavis.
All of them are very "sophomoric", tending towards crude shock value for their humor.
Sometimes I'm in the mood for that, even if I'm well over 16 (as Raid decried).
When I'm not, I don't watch. It's not all that complicated for people who get offended. IMO.
