Yale Game Box Score MVG: Kenny Boynton

Kenny Boynton had his best shooting night of the season hitting 8 of 10 from the arc, leading the Gators to a convincing 79-58 win over Yale. Kenny's team high 28 points and no turnovers gave him a Value Score of 109 followed by a bounce back game from Will Yeguete who scored 14 points and team high 9 rebounds for a Value Score of 83. Casey Prather got starter minutes with the absence of Erik Murphy and turned in a solid performance of 9 points, 6 boards, 1 assist and 1 steal giving Casey a Value Score of 60.

The Gators next game will kick-off the SEC season on Wednesday against the Georgia Bulldogs.

I like your analysis, but I do not like that players are docked for EVERY FG attempt, even makes. You should not be penalized for taking and making a shot. I guess the +4 per point makes up for it, but still don't like a negative for a good play. Murph got -20 for taking 10 shots the night he was 10-for-10.

It's not so much penalizing a player for taking a shot, its just a way to simplify the formula from the box score. Instead of breaking shots down into makes and misses you take two points off for every shot taken and award four points for each point. So a made two point shot doesn't take off two points, it gives you six points.

Apex, the credit values for points scored takes into account that there is a negative value for FGAs and FTAs. If a player shoots a decent percentage, they will accumulate credits. If they shoot poorly, then they will not. A person who takes a lot of field goal attempts or free throws but misses a lot is hurting the team and should not be rewarded as much as a person who scores with a higher shooting percentage.

A two point bucket is 2x4-2= 6 credits. If they shoot 1 out of 4 they net 0 credits.
A three point bucket is 3x4-2= 10 credits. If they shoot 1 out of 6, they net 0 credits.

+4 for hits, -2 for shots

+1 for FT hits, -1 for shots

this is an appropriate weighting method because it is linked to the hit percentage and reduces values when a player takes a lot of shots and hits only a few.

Counting only misses would accomplish essentially the same thing, but hits would have to be reduced in value.

This one is easy to figure and rewards 50% or greater shooting from the FG line, and 33% shooting from 3-point land.
