My ass. That hit was off the charts...blocked or unblocked.

Best defensive hit ever in college football....all things considered.

This was a pretty crazy hit as well. Jackson would've went places if he weren't so damn stupid.

It was the best hit by a DL I recall seeing. Keep these items in mind:

Late in the game, team trailing and D already on the field too long.

Bad ref call the play before


What makes it the best is that the runner earlier in the game speared him on a block with his helmet. You could just see the hatred for the ref and revenge factor all wrapped in one.

Lots of DBs make big hits on passing plays. Clowney recovered the ball with his left hand too before the QB could get there.

The popping helmet is the exclamation point. I too laugh every time I see it. It almost looks like cartoon violence.

Eye of the beholder. I agree with most of the above but not all db hits are the same.

What separates wright and even Jones hit to me is the sheer change in direction at the point of contact.

Wright in particular sends joey kent in the other direction so suddenly and with such force that he literally flies backward with his feet off the ground.

Didn't think that was so spectacular. Leading with the helmet if anything. Is Jackson pumping gas somewhere in South Carolina now or is he banned for a two mile radius from gas stations?

One of the top 10 hits I have ever seen on a football field and one of those ten was my own*.

Seriously. I hardly played in high school and when I finally got into a game in my sophomore year when we were blowing out an opponent I was put in at middle linebacker. This was the Dick Butkus Era and I was all of 5'7 and 145lbs. I was also a cornerback. I played a series and even had a tackle then we went on offense and scored on the first play. I was standing on the sidelines when the defense went on the field and a coach noticed I was still standing there and told me to get in pronto.

I was a good 40 yards from the line of scrimmage and I took off. I was small but fast and I never slowed down as I hit the line of scrimmage with a 40 yard head start and hit the QB literally as he took his first step back. I wasn't offsides either.

I hit the QB perfectly literally lifting a guy a good 40 lbs heavier than me off the ground and driving him back a good 5 yards. When he hit the ground the ball popped out and one of my teammates returned it for a TD.

Rudy should have had such a hit.

BTW, the coach (Dwain Painter who coached in the NFL) re-played that play TEN times during our usual Monday film sessions. He called it the greatest play he had ever seen.

I concur and for anybody asking even 40+ years later I planned the whole thing.

An old HS teammate recently friended me on Facebook and it was literally the first thing he mentioned. It wasn't the highlight of my high school years (surviving them was a really big accomplishment ; ) and I am not doing a "Glory Days" rendition but any time I see a big hit I am reminded of my brief time in the spotlight.

But as I said before I wasn't a very good football player. I was willing and to me that is always enough.

While I realize that he wasn't blocked on the play, the idea that a man that size got there just before the handout, knocked the runner's helmet off and had the wherewithal to find and get the ball was "Wilburesque." Wright's hit was good safety play. Clowney's play can't be replicated by just any Dlineman. I give it a 9.5.

On ATH today they used Clowney's hit to argue for earlier entry into the NFL.....On PTI they said (jokingly) that NFL teams will plan now to have the worst record next year in order to get Clowney.
