Even with this year improved oline play Rainey and Demps couldn't have done what Gilly did. He took a lot of hits and yards after contact. Demps and Rainey would get tackled by a gust of wind!! Outside edge was the run game for those two. No way we lost when we lost those two. Gilly hardly ever lost yards.
Have to disagree with u on this one man.
Rainey and Demps would have been more productive this year than the year previous just in a different way than Gillie. Rainey was much tougher running the ball than people give him credit for. I loved the way Gillie always got positive yards. One of the problems we had this year is we had few explosive plays and had to have long drives. Many times drives were stalled because of penalties or bad sacks by Jeff. When you have explosive players you need less long drives. It just would have been a different dynamic I am not trying to say who is better just saying that we lost explosive players and they would have fared better this year since they would have had a better line.
O line will be amazing next year with a core of better backs IMO.... But if you line Burton up at TE then you might be able to get some similar explosiveness. Not comparing him to Reed by any means at all, but to me Burton sometimes lacks at his playmaking ability because he doesn't have a set role, so maybe in the offseason you put him in a role like Reed and maybe he gets a little more consistent? Or maybe makes more plays? Thoughts?...
I think Burton doesnt make a ton of plays because he is just not that explosive. His best asset is he is a smart player who can help in a lot of ways. I think the staff is using him properly if they are going to have him on offense. He causes some confusion to the defense even if he doesn't get the ball because they have trouble defining what role he is playing.

Touché... Well they already line him up at H-back, RB, WR, TE... Maybe give him something consistent and he can be more consistent?
So you agree that we lost explosiveness but you like the teams running game this year.
I love the way Gillie played and give him credit for playing well this year but the biggest difference was the Oline was better this year when healthy. The team will be even better running the ball next year because the Oline will be more improved.
The offensive line was NOT that much better! At least not in my opinion.
Demps and Rainey were special in space, and against teams our offensive line could push around, they put up big number and big plays. But against good defenses, they were almost completely ineffective. They rarely ever had yardage after initial contact. You can blame that on the O-line, but I think it was more that those 2 weren't built for the running game we were trying to run.
Our running game with Gillisee was more of a power running game. Even when he was hit behind the LOS, he usually picked up 2 or 3 yards. Gillislee had very few runs where he lost yardage. There were a few games where the o-line played well at times, but generally, I thought they were inconsistent and disappointing.
I agree that the running game and o-line should be even better next year.
I like how every February we sign elite prospects like Taylor and Thompson, who happened to be the two best tight ends in the country coming out of high school last year, and because they didn't blow up right away there are people who actually wonder who we'll replace a guy like Reed with. You would never know that Thompson suffered an injury that forced him to redshirt, and you'd never know that we all knew Taylor needed to gain weight before becoming an elite tight end.
And you can always count on somebody to look up from their Dark Knight Rises coloring book to blow some noise about not having explosive players to replace the explosive players on their way out.
How much better can you really do at a position than bringing in the two best prospects available in their class?

He is fine where he is. He wouldn't be a dynamic player at any one of those positions. But having him play all the positions gives defenses trouble since they cant define his position . This is the main reason I hope we get Jalen Hurd in the 2014 class, he is like Trey Burton 3.0 he also can play all those positions but unlike Trey he will be dynamic at each one.

I read up on Jalen Hurd? So is he just not a RB? Do you now his size, and his 40?
Gut feeling is that 12 months from now, Kent Taylor will make you forget about Jordan Reed...
Hard to believe the Gators staff didnt see this coming during their recruiting pitch to him last year. He was the No.1 TE in his class according to Rivals, and had the following offer list:

I really like Burton there. In this offense, the tight ends really carve you up off play action in the flats and screens. Burton can be very effective in that role. If Taylor gives you a slight vertical threat, to go with the blocking tight ends and tackles we have on the roster, we can be solid there. Would love to have Reed back because he has upside that hasn't been tapped yet, but I think we should be solid regardless. Seems volume and versatility are more important at that position in this system than high end talent.
I couldn't agree more. I will be surprised if our tight ends (or those who line up in that position from time to time) don't combine to produce as much as Reed did individually this year. In short, I think we will be just fine at tight end and close to equally as productive.
He plays RB but he can line up at WR TE etc. He has the skill set to do it all.
6-2 210 right now
Wow!! Kid has great vision, very fluent, and awesome power... For 6'2 210 the kid absolutely moves! I would say he has a 4.4-4.5 40' time, this would be a great get for the gators next year!
