2013 SEC slate about to begin: How do you think WE'LL do?
SEC season about to begin for both the men (after a game at Yale) and women. how do you think both gator squads will fare in the SEC regular season? [ a supplement to the pinned prediction thread, just focusing on the conference schedule(s)]
first, the gals,
Gator Women:
@ UK ----------- big L (0-1)
vs LSU ---------- L (0-2)
@ Miss State ---- W (1-2)
vs Tenn -- logic says big L, but this might be the year to spring an upset w/ the coaching transition in knoxville...? L (1-3)
vs USCe --------- L (1-4)
vs Ole Miss ------ W (2-4)
@ UGA ---------- big L (2-5)
@ Mizzou ------- L (2-6)
vs Bama -------- W (3-6)
@ Auburn ------- W (4-6)
@ Tex A&M ---- spring an upset! W (5-6)
vs UGA -------- L (5-7)
vs Vandy ------ spring an upset! W (6-7)
@ Bama ------- W (7-7)
vs UGA -------- L (7-8)
@ USCe ------- big L (7-9)
16 regular season conference games, predicting a 7 & 9 record in the SEC for the gals.
Gator Men:
vs UGA -------- Big W (1-0)
@ LSU -------- W (2-0)
@ Tex A&M --- L (2-1) road weary
vs Mizzou ----- W (3-1) big saturday home win
@ UGA, what?! again, so soon?! W (4-1)
@ Miss State --- W (5-1)
vs USCe ----- Big W (6-1)
vs Ole Miss ---- W (7-1)
@ Ark --------- L (7-2) rough venue
vs Miss State, again? what's w/ this schedule?! Big W (8-2)
vs UK, big test - W (9-2)
@ AU ---------- W (10-2)
@ Mizzou ------ L (10-3)
vs Ark --------- W (11-3)
@ Tenn ------- L (11-4) our annual loss in knoxville...
vs Bama ------ W (12-4)
vs Vandy ----- Big W (13-4)
@ UK --------- L (13-5) Rupp!
18 conference games for the men. predicting a 13 & 5 regular season record for the Gator men.

I have us losing @ Mizzou, @ UT, @ UK...with tossups being home against Mizzou and UK...so like you, I don't think we SHOULD lose more than 5 games...we need to win our first 3 for sure...we have no business losing to UGA, LSU, or Tamu...

I think the women will go 9-7 in conference play. The only losses I see them with is Tennessee, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Georgia, and a sweep to Kentucky, with a possible slip to Vanderbilt as well. That would have us at 20-10 going into the SEC tournament.
I think the men will go 14-4 with losses at Missouri, at Kentucky, at Tennessee, and at Arkansas (you know we always drop one that we have no business dropping). That would have us at 24-6 going into the SEC tournament.

My view is that UF must find 10 wins in the pre-conference season and find 10 wins in the conference to earn a bid. A win over Yale gets UF those 10 pre-conference wins.
I also like to divide the conference up in to 4 game groupings though going from 16 to 18 games has messed that up a bit. In the SEC I see it as:
vs UGA, W
@ LSU, W
@ aTm, W
vs UMo, W
So I have UF starting 4-0.
@ UGA, W this is a shakey pick as UF has not faired well there no matter how bad they have been in recent seasons.
@ Miss State, W
vs USCe, W
vs Ole Miss, W
So I have UF starting 8-0. I could see a loss somewhere in these 8 games, but
@ Ark, L
vs Miss State, W
vs UK, W
@ AU, W
So I have UF 11-1 after 12 SEC games. I could even see UF winning at UAR.
@ Mizzou, L
vs Ark, W
@ Tenn, L
vs Bama, W
So I have UF 13-3 after 16 SEC games. UF did win at UTn two years back but I never predict UF wins against UTn until UF develops a pattern of beating them.
vs Vandy, W
@ UK, L
So I have UF 1-1 in the last 2 and 14-4 in the SEC. I could see an extra random loss or two. I just do not see where I can predict such a loss.
24 and 6 heading into the SEC tourney would set UF up for a very good seed.

8-8 for the gals

Was only a few weeks ago when there were a bunch of posters thinking undefeated in conference. Well, at least a rather easy time of it.

Had the Gators been playing the past 3 weeks like they played during the first 7 games, I would say they would lose perhaps 1, perhaps 2 SEC games.
However, given the way they have been playing recently, I think your 13-5 is not an unreasonable estimate of this years results.
Perhaps the Strangest thing to me is the absolute disappearance of the Will Yeguete we have come to expect in the past two games. Given the very thin front court, he is really vital for success.

Why does everyone have us losing @ Arky? Didnt we put up like 90 on them at that arena last year? I know that BJ Young kid is back but who else do they have?

Bud Walton is a tough venue, and they have some offensive talent. Marshawn Powell can score as well as Young. I doubt we're going to win every game that we should win, and that's one that we could drop.

Think both teams will do a little better than OP has it. No way the men lose to the Aggies, LSU will be a tougher win. Looking forward to the Mizzou matchup.

Hard season to predict since the SEC has been its predictably lackluster self in non-conference play, while our offensive inconsistency will keep us in closer games than we want at times and make us susceptible to the occasional upset. 13-5 or 14-4 sounds pretty fair. 15-3 always seemed like a long shot. Too many potholes along the way.

i don't necessarily like to look ahead. like to take 'em one at a time. of course i've violated that here and over on the baseball board w/ a similar thread.
i do like how basketball can be split into different components - the sec schedule is one of those. good to look at it separately, since, now, you do begin to play for titles. what preceded was just that, a prologue. time to double down on the intensity and focus.

Men: 15-3
Don't know enough about women's basketball to venture a guess.
If we lose 4-5 SEC games we've underachieved. The SEC is pretty bad this year. We'll probably be underdogs in 2 games and there will be 2-3 toss-ups. I'll predict we win a game we're expected to lose, lose a game we're expected to win, and lose one of the toss-up games.
I also believe we are more likely to be 16-2 than 14-4.

14-4 in SEC. We have probably the toughest slate in the conference.

Yeah, since UF plays each UK and UMo twice, UF's conference RPI maybe be about as strong as an SEC schedule can give one. Though those two are somewhat offset by playing MSU and UGa twice.

I don't think so. We are the only team that doesn't have to play Florida.

Outside of the cliche that we could potentially lose to anyone if we play poorly enough, I would say that a loss to them would be highly unlikely.
They are not the same team we creamed last year in Sunrise.
