Smile Air Force Academy Game Box Score MVG: Erik Murphy

Erik Murphy had a monster game leading the Gators to a 78-61 victory over the Air Force Academy. Erik scored 21 points on 8 for 10 shooting from the field with 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocked shots, a steal and no turnovers for a season and team high Value Score of 125. That Value Score was more than the combined score of the next two Gators, Kenny Boynton and Patric Young, who tallied Value Scores of 59 and 51 as the only other Gators who scored in double figures with 14 and 13 points respectively.

The Gators and Falcons played a close 1st half before the Gators broke open the game in the 2nd half as they hit 70% of their shots and used their size advantage in the paint to shoot down the Falcons.

Box Score Value Leaders:
Murphy........125

Do you keep a list of MVG for each game? How many different players have been MVG so far this season? One of the great things about this team is that anyone can burn you on any given night.

Insti,

I created an album of the Gator MVG results. I just keep adding a new image for each game.

So by my count 6 different players have been MVG for at least one game this season. That is a real strength of this team.

I think any notion of Murphy being slowed by the hip pointer is over with after yesterday's outstanding performance

Agreed! He was active and aggressive on both ends, when he plays like that he is our best offensive weapon

I am glad Murphy had a good game. He was struggling in the AZ and KSU games.

In response to this question, since I have been keeping track of this statistic for a while, I created a list of the games played so far from my values and will continue this through the season.

As of right now, Relative to the Entire Team the following shows how varied performances have tended to be across the players - Highest then Lowest, by player ranked from the total highest to the lowest highest

Hi - LO -
125-34 - Murphy
114-04 - Boynton
107-30 - Wilbekin
097-00 - Rosario
094-27 - Young
088--7 - Yeguete
064-00 - Frasizer
051-14 - Prather

The other players have not really played enough in any game to earn enough points using this system. Walker had 28 against Bama State, and -4 against FSU; Graham had 17 against Bama State, and -5 against Marguette, and Ogbuze had 16 against both Bama State and Savannah St (he likes state schools), and -2 against FSU and Middle Tennessee.

The most consistent players have been Young, Murphy and Wilbekin. Most of the others have exhibited quite a bit of inconsistency in their play across this limited number of games. Boynton has exhibited the greatest variability based on the games so far - below are lists of the players Standard Deviation over the 10 games played to date:

34 - Boynton
32 - Murphy
27 - Rosario
26 - Yeguete
25 - Young
24 - Wilbekin
22 - Frazier
15 - Prather

So, it appears that Prather has, in fact, been the most consistent player and that is likely why, when you standardize to minutes, he has the highest value on the team

Interesting, I want to think about this a bit. In the meantime:

1. If the data are handy, could you provide the mean values for each player?

2. Have you thought at all about the values in this method? Do they come from Gator Jason or did he get this system from some other source?

Mr T,

When you "normalize" the player values to 20 minutes (or some other arbitrary number of minutes) Casey Prather comes out highest. Since Coach Donovan has elected not to play Casey starter minutes, he has not once generated enough of a value score to be awarded MVG in any game this season.

Maybe with the slump Will Yeguete has had recently, Casey will get an opportunity to play more and establish himself as one of the top players and be recognized as a MVG.

So the way I read this is:

1. a made 2 point FG is worth 6 points.
2. a made 3 point FG is worth 10 points.
3. a made FT is worth 3 points.
4. a change in the control of the ball is always worth 5 points positive or negative unless it is due to a rebound in which case it is only worth 4 positive points and offensive rebound that keep control of the ball and defensive rebounds that change control of the ball are worth the same 4 positive points.
5. a block is worth 4 positive points for some reason.

So it seems to me that this system is biased in favor of 3 point shooters particularly 3 point shooters who also have assists and steals. It appears to undervalue rebounders and two point shooters particularly if they do not shoot particularly well from the FT line.

Another way to look at this is:

A. a 50% shooter from the field takes two shots to make one on average and thus gets 8 - 2 - 2 = 4 points on average for each made basket.
B. a 33% shooter from the arc takes three shots to make one on average and thus gets 12 - 2 - 2 - 2 = 6 points on average for each made basket.

So even allowing for shooting percentage the value of a 3 point shot seems to be greater.
