I remember brick streets in my hometown of Green Cove Springs.

And recaps.

We had a kerosene heater in a house we lived in when I was younger. That was it - froze while waiting on my father to light it.

And old tractors

And Carol Burnett.

CB radios.

8 track tapes and 45 records.

Cane fishing poles.

My mom graduated there when GCS was the only high school in Clay county and they had the only theater too.

Worth at least two in the bush!

I remember when my mom bought her first car. It was a late 1940s Chrysler with those big white sidewall tires and with chrome all over it. No power anything of course. To get air, she had to pull a lever that raised a scoop doofligee between the hood and the windshield. The suspension was so bad, we all had to lean into corners.

Speaking of which, when I went to get my first driver's license, I had to do it in a three on a tree '63 Plymouth Valiant.

I hated that transmission but eventually I passed the test.

Passed my drivers test in Orlando where FHP had a simulated course paved in a field. Drove a '68 Corvair with 3-sp stick. Popped the clutch backing up and almost knocked over the parallel parking pole. It wobbled but stayed upright. The officer said, "Boy, you're pretty lucky. If it fell over you would have failed."

When you would leave for the day in the summer to go play with friends and be told to be back before dark...
When (if you had multiple kids in the house like me) your mom got tired of bickering over the tv and threw all of the kids out in the yard...and if you needed a drink you got it from the hose...
When you got home from school and had real chores to do, and homework to finish...
When you washed the dishes after dinner instead of rinsing them off and putting them in a dishwasher...
When soft drinks and ice cream were going out treats, not everyday in your fridge/freezer...
When kids had manners because not having them meant a very sore cheek...
When parents taught kids to have manners...
When the fear of having your father discipline you for doing something wrong was enough to keep you from doing anything really wrong in the first place...

I failed my pilots exam the first time I took the test but there was a reason. I was 17 years old and before I went up for my test one of the flight instructors told me the FAA examiner I was going up with was gay. When I almost crashed on landing I failed. My flight instructor was pissed because he had never had a student of his fail before. He asked me what the problem was and I told him I was scared to death. He said, you were never scared before. I answered, I was never alone with a fag before. True story, it was the 60s and homosexuality was not as open as it is today. I did not want to be in the same airplane with that guy and could not keep my mind on flying.
