I was asked to to join a team today for the one in May. Please share any tips on what I should train for.
I'm 6'0 185
Cut upper body/my legs could use a lot of work (way too thin/weak).
I could probably run 8/9 miles no problem but a day of skiing (which I did last week) and I'm totally shot. I was gasping for air constantly. I'm hoping it had mostly to do w/me being in the Rockies.
I think I'm in shape to workout and run straight, but am probably shot for actual activity...which this appears to be. I'm going to start Saturday by going to a trail and running 5 miles.

John if you can run 8-9 miles and also lift weights you are already there my man. I would say trail running is the best thing to do bc you will get used to running on uneven ground.
I was training doing 4 miles once or twice a week along with my normal weight lifting, and I was fine. I also bike 40 miles a week to work and back which helps. Also put pull-ups in your workout regiment if they aren't already.
Sounds like you will crush it, but its always fun to train.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Rella, looking forward to doing this. Everyone who has done it seems to have come away with a fantastic experience.

I love the Tough Mudder talk. John, I agree with Rella if you can run 8 - 9 miles. You are ready. The distances are actually easier if you can find women in tight wet spandex that run slightly faster than you, the miles fly by. I may suggest that you add many pulling movements into you routine. Example: pull ups are better prep for TM than presses, practice pulling yourself up to your waist on a chin up bar, it seems we do alot of that type move on the course, and of course the monkey bars are good training.
Having said all that I still think for me the running is the hardest to prepare. I ran 3 miles a few times a week and threw in an occasional 6 miler a few weeks out and that seemed to work.
I am trying to post a few pics of the race. I will as soon as I canfigure it out.

Spartan Race is the best. Did the Spartan Beast in June. Awesome experience.

Had an awesome time! I thought it was waaaaaay more difficult than the Tampa one in December.
They also must have upped the voltage on the electrodes, because that ish was not playing games at all. On the finish line, I got zapped something serious and blacked out! After picking my face out of the mud, I got back up and struggled to the finish. It was shocking.
My favorite par was spending an hour and a half at the finish line pounding beers and watching/cheering on people ruining through the electrodes and getting absolutely OWNED. It was no joke.

I had a blast too. It was my first Mudder, so i wouldn't know about upping the voltage, but you were right it would put you on your butt. My first thoughts were "wow, 10,000 volts ain't no joke!"
A friend and I finished in around 3 hours, all obstacles complete. My conditioning was on par, however you spend about 80-90% of the time in/on sand/mud so you rely on your stabilizer muscles instead of your normal conditioned muscles...that is my area that i need to improve....some beach/sand running/conditioning may be in order.
Today is "Mudder Monday" so i wore my "finisher" shirt and headband to the office this morning, still beaten/battered/bruised/and cut up...lol.
...so i already signed up for Nov 2nd Tampa event, and likely a 2014 one in Pensacola early next year.
