How many ships left?
Realistically, how many ships do we have left?
With 21 current commits, based on our current roster, seniors, probably early departures and presumed attrition, I don't think we can take more than 3-4.
So all the excitement about the 8-10 big names (including a lot of decommits) needs to be tempered...a lot.
I think we get:
Brown
Daniel
Swanson
and one more guy - plus one like Ramsey or Collins or another WR like Clark or DT Reed
possibly another LB if we lose McMillian (Johnson would be my bet)
That will be a very solid class.
What do you think?
We are a hot commodity right now. I almost wish we had half the number of commits than we have right now to make room for some of the studs that are showing interest in us.
I bet we have a Bama/USCw freakish talent quality class next year.

You're pretty spot on. We'll have around 25 this class, depending on if rumors of who is leaving are true or not.
Definitely Brown.
Likely Daniel (Ogundeko seems to like Clemson now) which is fine, I would take Daniel over him. Let's hope grades are okay.
I think our LB's stick, but who knows with Urban. Either way we'd get Johnson if they flipped McMillan which is about even for us.
Could possibly add that South Carolina DB Rollins?
Reed
Alex Collins (hopefully)Possibly clark?
It's really hard to tell since we don't really know what we're losing yet. I'd assume OL/DE/DT/DB+1 wr or RB is what we would aim for.

Right now we have 77 scholarship players meaning there are 8 scholarships available. 13 seniors are departing meaning we will have no less than 21 open slots for 2013. Add in a couple of early NFL draft entrants and sprinkle in a transfer or two and youre looking at around 25 available scholarships for 2013.

Yes, 24 or 25 appears likely for this class.
Regarding who, well there is a distinct tendency in recruiting for odd things to happen, like losing both of the earlier silents. Dawson was the one I didn't want to see go.

I forgot about early-enrollees counting back to the previous year. I know about 6 guys are enrolling early but Im not sure how many spots are left (if any) in the 2012 class to be counted towards.

Early Enrollees only matter when you want to take more than 25 in a single recruiting class. The number that ALWAYS matters is 85.
I think transfers will be plentiful this season and while we won't reach on a player, we won't turn away someone we want.

Are there any players who were walkons and who this year received a scholarship but will likely not get it renewed for next year? And if so, is that being factored into the current formulas above?

Don't think so. My guess is that predicted attrition is based on the combination of early entries, academic/legal casualties, transfers, etc. FWIW, I don't think we've ever awarded a shop to a walk-on and then gone back and pulled it unless he was kicked off the team with just cause. Seriously doubt we do this to make room for incoming freshmen.

Walk on scholarships are for one year only and are given if not all the eligible 85 fill up with scholarship players. After that one year, they have to earn it again if they stay on or they become a full ride guy and are awarded a full scholarship. Don't see that happening with any of our walk ons though

So the general consensus is 4, maybe 5 if we have a defector. Pretty much what I was assuming would be the case.

Now we know...more...much more. Strong rumors that we REALLY like the Tampa Fullback. We know we want a WR (North, Treadwell, flip Robinson) and still have Collins visiting on Dec 15th. We also seem to be going after at least one more DE with Ogundeko and Daniels. So that could be Four more right there. After that, it is just "+1" who at this point would be Ramsey or Alexander at CB. Tunsil at OL, Walker at DE, Foster at LB and ??? think that is it.
13 SRs
7 open ships (Garcia took one)
4 JRs going to the NFL (my guess)
X number of transfers = total class. My guess is six transfers.

I don't see us going as high as 30. 28 is probably the upper limit.

79 on the roster(2012)
24 commits
---
103 players
13 SR's graduating
---
90 on the roster
so to hit 85 total scholarships a combination of 5 players must leave early or transfer.
Do I have this correct?
If more than 5 LE/Transfer we can bring in more commits.
But this is where I get confused, you can only sign 25 commits per signing period any more than that and they can be counted back. but how far back? 1 year? more? We signed 21 in 2012 so does that mean only 4 can count back?

I'm pretty sure It'd be 4 plus how many ever enrolled early the year before which was a relatively high number if I'm not mistaken (7ish). I think the overall 85 limit is our bigger concern.

That's what I like to hear. Let's get to 30+. There is a lot of deadweight on the roster.
