Billy D on Our Non-Conference Schedule
[Donnie] Jones worked under Donovan at Marshall and UF from 1994-2007. “I don’t like playing Donnie, but it’s good for both schools,” Donovan said.
Asked if he could see continuing the UF-UCF series, Donovan said. “I don’t know. (Athletic director) Jeremy (Foley) has talked about us playing the Lakers next season, with some of the ideas for our non-conference schedule.”

What was he saying with that Lakers comment?
We're already scheduling too tough?

Sounds like the implication is that Foley is strong arming him a bit into the tougher schedules we have seen. He and foley get along very well though by all accounts so it probably isn't that big a deal, just hazing Foley a bit.

The conference dug in the spurs on the ADs to upgrade the out-of-conference hoops schedule, and the ADs prodded the coaches. A very good development for UF, IMO. A few years back, the quality of the OOC opponents we were choosing was spotty, to be kind.

I love the tougher schedule.
Two years ago, we considerably upgraded the SOS and were rewarded by the Selection Committee with a high seed. Last season, we upgraded even more, and finished with a similar record, but were not rewarded for it. Go figure.

Wonder how many points underdog the Lakers would be?

I think it was just good natured ribbing at Foley. Nothing more. Billy is a funny guy and likes to take a humorous jab now and again.

If I were Billy, I would schedule the Lakers as an exhibition game.
Although it would likely do wonders for the RPI, I don't think it should count.
Good one Billy D!

Collegiate baseball teams have played pro teams in spring training (usually very depleted rosters) in exhibitions, so I don't see why it couldn't happen. Perhaps with the Heat or Magic and not the Lakers, though. I'd pay to see UD once again in the O'Dome.

Nah... not at all.
Actually, it is Mike Hill who is largely responsible for scheduling, but all is done in conjunction with the staff and its input.
Just some light-hearted teasing that Hill laughed about.

As long as you don't lose all of those tough ooc games (close or by a big margin)...
