Smile UCF Game Box Score MVG: Scottie Wilbekin

Scottie Wilbekin had a monster game off the bench with career highs in scoring, assists and rebounds in a 79-66 victory over the UCF Knights. Scottie scored 17 points with 5 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals and 2 turnovers giving him a Value Score of 107. Following Scottie closely was senior Kenny Boynton with a Value Score of 92 earned on a team high 24 points and career high 8 rebounds. Casey Prather played only 13 minutes but that was long enough for Casey to come in third, racking up a Value Score of 54 with 8 points on 3-3 shooting, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 blocked shot.

As a team, the Gators came out cold shooting 0-9. Once again their defense bailed them out in the 1st half enabling them to get out to an 18 point lead. During the 2nd half, the Gators appeared as they were in a tryptophan hangover as the UCF Knights cut the lead to 7 points before the Gators woke up and extended it back to 18 and an eventual 13 point win. Overall, a good Gator victory with a week off before taking on the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Is this the first time someone has made the top 3 playing so few min. Or two of the top 3 were nonstarters.

Casey pretty much maxed out efficiency wise getting 54 credits in 13 minutes. On the flip side, Mike Rosario struggled scoring and passing the ball with 2-9 shooting and 3 TOs in 20 minutes for a net value score of 0.

Each game is different. Even our best player, Boynton, has had tough games. He only had a value score of 4 in the Savannah St game in 24 minutes of play. He obviously shook it off and the ankle sprain to have an outstanding game tonight.

This is the first time I recall that two backup players came out in the top three. I expect it may happen again with the Gators effectively having seven players who could start in any given game. I think our bench outscored their bench something like 28-0 so the Gators strength may be in its depth with quality, experienced players. Anything we get out of the freshmen is a bonus.

What was Frazier's score. He shot poorly, but had 4 steals.

We'll see. He got the start in the 2nd half over Rosario, and overall I think it was his best game yet as a Gator. It'll be interesting to see if Mike or Scottie is the starter against Marquette.

I think Scottie starts. He looked incredible and is the better player today. Unfortunately Mike has not developed his game to the level we all hoped for. Hopefully he can be productive off the bench. Scotty is becoming the real deal as his offensive game seems to be catching up with his defensive game. may not be the best "pure" point but between he and the other guards we have a point guard by committee, though 8 dimes are not bad!

as stated in another thread.....this is the year that Scottie's growth curve should be huge. Didn't see the game, however it looks like the move was made.

nice to see that Prather has made a move as well.

Donovan was hinting at that in his post-game presser. Wilbekin was the starter during that exhibition game with Rosario at the three, then we went to Yeguete at the three because of Wilbekin's suspension. Given how frustrated Donovan is with Rosario's decision-making, as well as our problems offensively with Boynton, Rosario, and Yeguete on the perimeter, I suspect Wilbekin starts sooner rather than later and that Prather's own minutes in the frontcourt go up appreciably. The good thing about the stretch without Wilbekin and Prather was that we got to see the freshmen in some tough situations during live action, while Yeguete proved he can give us a different element at the three when we need to go big.

Rosario's best role with this club may be as a bench scorer, which we need given the struggles the freshmen guards are having on that end. He can give Boynton and Wilbekin longer breathers and put us in the occasional small lineup with three quicker guards on the floor. If he can put up 8-10 ppg off the bench the way Weeks or Hodge did down the stretch as seniors, we will be deeper and more balanced offensively when some of the starters hit the bench.

I'm watching the game now as I didn't get to watch it live. Strange How Larry Vitelle is going on and on about how out of the ordinary he thought this game was for somebody like Scotty Wilbiken. He kept waiting for Wilbekin to come back to earth. At one point he said "Scotty Wilbekin now just needs to remember who he is" ...so that he doesn't take too many shots. Found it strange as I think this is more of the Scotty that we will see this year versus his more defensive minded role the last couple of years.
