Smile Savannah St Game Box Score MVG: Patric Young

Patric Young stood tall in a game where defense dominated offensive play. Patric scored a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, a career high 6 blocked shots, 1 steal and only 1 turnover giving him a Value Score of 94. This was the type of game where the Gator's offense sputtered but their suffocating defense didn't allow Savannah St to score in double figures until late in the 1st half. Mike Rosario played well and finished with the second highest Value Score of 57 based on 10 points, 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 boards and only 1 turnover. Erik Murphy had a solid game with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals for a Value Score of 50.

The Gators continue to show themselves as a defensive force holding Savannah St to 40 points or 5 points under the Gators' opponent season average of 45 ppg. Young's emergence as box score leader shows a diversity in players who have led the Gators in that category. Kenny Boynton, previous game MVG, had a season low 4 Value Score and left the game early with a foot or lower leg injury. Fatigue may have played a role in the team's overall offensive sluggishness with 2 games in 3 days and another coming up Friday against UCF.

You could really tell that Young was making an effort to change ends quickly, it looked like he often started off at one pace & then remembered he needed to hustle & accelerated. Donovan has been on him to work hard like this & it paid off in this game.

Young has double doubles against Alabama St. And Savanna St. ,
IMO, It is more important that he is a 8 pt., ten rebound/ 4 block 0 turnover guy for us vs. a 12 pt, 6 board 4 turnover type guy - he is more Ben Wallace than Al Horford,

so let your inner Ben Wallace shine Big Pat Young and we will go far

Patric needs to rule the paint on D. Scoring is a bonus. He seems to work well with Rosario in getting power play buckets off high passes near the bucket. Agree that he needs to limit his turnovers to keep his productivity up. I like the reference to Ben Wallace. If Patric can emulate Big Ben's game, the Gators will be tough to beat. He and Yeguete are physical players down low. Will is our Dennis Rodman without the bad tatts and bad attitude. Murphy has beefed up too though he doesn't play a physical game. Murphy has the most versatility and can go down low or play outside equally well. When his mind is right, he can dominate like he did against Wisky. These three guys are special and give the Gators a front court advantage over perhaps, every team they will play this year.
