Default Post feeds need work

Quote:
one area where the Gators struggled Wednesday night — establishing Patric Young in the post. Part of it had to do with some sloppy entry passes and part of it had to do with Young’s inability to hold onto the ball. But many of UF’s 12 first-half turnovers were the result of poor post feeds.
Quote:
“We’ve got to do a better job in practice,” Donovan said. “We’ve got to work on that because there are times Patric has got great post position and we are not getting him the ball and then we did throw it, we turn the ball over.”
http://brockway.blogs.gatorsports.co...eds-need-work/

After two games, UF players with the most Turn-overs:

Patric Young: 9
Will Yuguete: 7
Mike Rosario: 5
Mike Frazier: 5
Kenny Boynton: 3

Interestingly, Erik Murphy only turned the ball over once this season.

One thing the passer could do when being guarded closely is to pump fake/head fake to try to throw off the defender before passing the ball in to the post. From what I saw when the guards were trying to feed the post, Boynton/Rosario have mostly thrown in a bounce pass - they could also try throwing in a lob pass to Young.

Against Wisconsin, Rosario did throw a couple of nifty lob passes to Young (but also had a couple of turnovers when attempting to do so again) when they were doing that pick 'n roll play early in that game!

What else can these players do to try to improve the post feeds?

Motion. The offense was very stagnant in a lot of those post feeds. Good teams will easily deny such obvious passes to a stationary big.

We could swing the ball from one side to the other while Young seals off his defender or our 4 could set a screen for PY. There are many ways to do it. Except a guard standing still outside the arc passing to a big standing still in the post. Just don't do that.

This is probably the area that most needs improvement. It'll get there. Kind of like when we had Macklin/Tyus/Parsons. Once our guards began concerted efforts to go inside, we became a MUCH better team.

Get in the post earlier in the possesion before the defense has time to dig in. Most of our TO's in feeding the post came from late entries. Our perimeter players need to look into the post immediately when catching the ball.

Not that this has cost us yet, as the overall play of the team has been good.

I think this will improve when Wilbekin plays.

But that is a lot of turnovers, for sure.

Fortunately, that is pretty much the major problem the team has shown.

Timing.
For whatever reason, we passed on some easy post passes when PY had solid position, and then tried to force it inside later in the possession.

Agree 100%

PY has also fumbled a few entry passes when he has had good position and the pass was there. Gotta work on those hands!

The entry passes were really good against Georgetown. Rosario had a few issues that game.

Frazier issues look to me like he has to adjust to the speed of the college game. He'll be fine in time.
