A) the ticket was given to you for free
B) you paid a significant amount for the ticket

By making tickets free they extinguished the inherent value of the event.
No, the error was in making students sign up ahead of time instead of camping out. When they changed that is when we saw the drop off in student attendance (and energy).

I'll bet when we go to Wisconwsin net year, their stands will be full. Big 10 fills their arenas; ACC other than fsu will fill arenas. Florida is not a basketball state. If it's not football, it's not a spectator sport.

Well that is another example of Lowering the perceived value.

I am new to Gainesville and move here from champaign Illinois. I am u of illinois alumni and have had season tickets for football and basketball since my dad graduated in the 70's. Went to 90 percent of basketball games. I now have season tickets for gator football and basketball. Been to all the gators home games so far and it is different here. Games like this in champaign are sold out and crazy even on weeknights. Assembly hall is 16,000+ capacity too. I am kind of suprised by attendance at bball here, but then again not. Florida is a football school primarily and Illinois is basketball although Florida's program has been better the last 15 years by far. I got season tickets here that are much better than I had in Illinois and am so excited. If I wanted seats at Illinois were I have them at the o dome I would have had to donate 10,000. Here it's 1000. I hope to move up a little every year and enjoy the games. I am still kind of confused by the attendance thus far though.

I am in raleigh and occasionally see the Pack, UNC and Duke play.

I would give my left nut to attend the ball games in G'ville.

Sellouts should be an entirely logical problem to solve. If you don't sell all the tickets to a game, reduce the price as it gets closer to tipoff. If the paid attendance is under 10K, I don't think no-shows is really the problem. But still, it's more fun to be with a 9K crowd with energy than a 12K crowd that's flat.

Go GATORS!

It's Madison Wisconsin. The only thing to do there is drink and fornicate

Yes, Wisconsin sells out every game and was 7th in attendance last year at a bit over 17k (ie capacity of Kohl Center). While not immune to lackluster crowds for lesser games, I can almost guarantee it'll be full & rocking for the return game next year.

And to give you ample prep time, I highly recommend you make the road trip! There's actually plenty to do in Madison - very cool city even beyond the university. Bigger than Gainesville, but to me it feels like a bigger city than it is due to being sort of squeezed on the isthmus between the big lakes. Don't worry though - next fall I'll be here further pushing for the trip and providing more details.
