Default Murphy and Yeguete at the 3/4

I know the concern of this scenario is Yeguete playing the 3 on offense and in the brockway blog (yeah I know take it fwiw) said Murphy doesn't have the foot speed to guard the 3 on the other end. But could they play that lineup and switch assignments on offense and defense? Yeguete playing the 4 on offense and 3 on defense with Murphy doing the opposite? The 2 concerns I could see would be I am not sure how well Murphy could play the wing and the paint may get a little clogged with Will not being able to strech the floor

I suggested this last season. But my guess is it is not going to happen. Donovan only plays bigs about 24 to 25 minutes and thus needs big minutes out of Young, Murphy and Yeguete at the 4/5 with none to spare for the 3.

I guess I could see UF playing them together the odd game here were a big SF was causing UF problems. I don't see it on any regular basis.

Murphy doesn't have the foot speed to play the 3 in this system offensively either. I understand the desire to get your best 5 on the floor and I know everyone loves the way Will plays, but I really think he's bet suited coming off the bench. It gives us a lot of depth and the ability to rest guys, plus he provides a spark when he enters the game. Both Murphy and Yeguete will get plenty of playing time.

a lot of what everyone else has said. It isn't fair to ask Murph to play the 3 on o or d, he just simply isn't quick enough. Will could play the 3 on D in a pinch but on O would be a liability.

Our best lineup is Wilbekin, Boynton, Prather, Murph, Pat

With Yeguete, Rosario, Larson off the bench... that is only if prather can put together a solid 20-25 minutes per game. If he cannot, then Rosario will get a lot of play at the 3...

I agree that the problem comes more at the offensive end of the court than on defense. We can defend just fine with Yeguete on the three. But offense is a different story. We would occasionally put Lee or Noah out there at the three when we desperately needed some more length on the wing to defend the perimeter jumpers, but that was a stopgap sort of thing and it only happened because we had such good depth at the four and five spots.

If Yeguete is really up to 240lbs, it'd be impressive to see him guard a smaller very athletic 3 on the perimeter. You guys would know better than I would whether or not he could do that though.

Oddly enough though, if this lineup is worth trying, wouldnt the UK game be a good chance? Poythress is a big three who isn't exactly lightening quick on the perimeter. he's listed at exactly the same weight Yeguete is. Murphy could easily match up against Wiltjer and Young/Noel. It at least lines up better than it would against some teams. Really just talking defensively though. I agree I don't see a reason to try it offensively.

Yeguette at 240??? I see that he's listed at 240, but I'll believe it when I see it. Probably a typo and should be "204".

I spoke with WY at the LSU game and saw him again at the USC game. He is much bigger this year and solid as a rock.

Prather, given his superior physical abilities and now carrying roughly 220 lbs on a high jumping 6'6" frame, can handle big 3s well enough.

And yes, the 2006 team had Noah, Horford & Richard, (similar to Young, Murphy & Yeguete), with Moss as a rarely used backup. Larson is likely very similar to Moss in abilities. I know that there is a massive difference between Noah & Horford with Young and Murphy, but Yeguete, although not as strong, is certainly more versatile than Richard was.

Brewer was the ONLY 3 on the team, thus you saw Billy D in desperation play Werner more than he should have in 2007.

Although Noah occasionally went out to play the 3, that was only in special cases, and really, the 2006 team had no more depth at 4/5 than this team has.

For the reasons everyone mentioned, I just don't see the likelihood of much play at the 3 from Murphy or Yeguete.

Hopefully, Prather can contribute a solid 20-25 minutes, with perhaps some at the 4, and maybe Rosario playing some 3.

I think everyone agrees that this is the most likely scenario.

I am going to have to repectively disagree with you a little regarding 4/5 depth. The 2006 team had tons of it. Adrian Moss was a heckuva 4th big man and came up huge for us in the National title game against UCLA. I don't see the comparison between Moss and Larson. There was not a big drop off for us when Moss came into the game, even though he came in for future NBA stars. I can only hope that Larson gets to the point where Billy feels comfortable using him in the way he used Moss.

Well, either of these guys playing the 3 seemed like an unlikely prospect at any time, but now, with Larson gone, unless there is some quality walk-on big man to play some minutes, this appears very nearly impossible.

Thats what I thought, but during SEC media day Billy mentioned his weight at 240 and said he wanted him to lose some. He didn't sound thrilled with the weight from what I remember. DOn't have the quote though.

Well here is what Donovan said:

Quote:
Donovan also said junior forward Will Yeguete needs to lose to some weight, but thinks it will happen in practice.
