Default Recommend a Linux distribution for kids on an old laptop

I have an old laptop that I was going to let the kids play with and was going to use this as an excuse to dabble in Linux. I've been looking at Mint and then two kid-centric distributions, Qimo and Edubuntu. Anyone have any thoughts on these, or suggestions for something else that I should consider?

Do you have the specs of this old laptop? I'd think any flavor of Ubuntu would be good.

Dell Inspiron 1000, Celeron processor (2.2 GHz), 40 GB hard drive, 512 MB ram. I tried Edubuntu yesterday, but it was pretty slow (but not as bad as XP after being on for a couple of days).

Since you say it is slowing down as time goes by you can try the following little program. I've had good luck with it on older machines. Helps with memory. You may have to restart it every time you turn off the computer as I don't believe it is put in startup.

Also might want to run something like Malwarebytes just to look for any infections you AV is not catching.
