Have a growler of a new semi-local brewery called Calf Killer in my fridge. It's their Little Guy Ale, and its pretty solid.
Heard great things about the schlafy pumpkin.

Haven't had anything by Schlafly since I lived in St. Louis ten years ago. They were quite good at what were the basics at the time, APAs, Stouts and Porters. Had one of the nicest brew pub and restaurant spaces anywhere. Owners were nice guys. No comment on their mom. Down the stretch, they didn't keep up with Boulevard out of KC, which was a much more visionary brewery. Boulevard eventually overtook them locally. People in St. Louis were slow to adopt craft brews feeling it was disloyal to the "Royal Family." Even five or six years ago, you'd get funny looks drinking a craft beer in one of the old taverns near the brewery. Wonder how they feel about Budweiser now.

Life's too short to drink bad beer. I'm glad I found this thread now.

My mother grew up in Belgium by way of Italy, so I'm partial to them when I used to go there during my summer breaks instead of doing internships

My top beers are

1. Kwak up until 2004 - I feel that Belgian brewers have overextended themselves because of the demand. Hence the quality has gone down a little.

2. Ciney (yes that's the correct spelling) Super delicious, however they're not importing outside of Belgium as of this moment (I think). I know for sure you can't get it in the States.

3. Brut Des Flanders - Same owners of Kwak. These are fermented in Champagne barrels. It's a great pre-dinner drink used with a Champagne flute. You can tell a non beer drinking girl that its champagne or prosecco and she wouldn't believe it's beer.

4. St. Feuillien from the tap.. Another delicious Belgian

I'll post more of what I'll be drinking next...

What do you think of Orval? I've tried all the Trappist ales and that's my fave. I know it's not considered by many to be the best, but drinking that beer is such an intense experience. I can site there and watch it pour into the glass for five minutes, the way the head builds up into boulders. I usually hold my face over the glass. The bouquet almost brings tears to my eyes. It's a blend of wildflowers and fresh bubblegum right out of the wrapper. The taste is very complex with the wild yeast, medium to high alcohol and just the right hop bite to it. It laces beautifully in the glass, especially if you're drinking from an actual Orval goblet. I'll stare at an empty goblet for a few minutes before I order another.

Welcome to the thread.

I've recently started getting into Belgians but I've only had a lot of the mass produced stuff. Orval, st Bernardus, chimay, rochefort, rodenbach, De Proefbrouwerij, and a few others.

What should I look out for? I've heard all about Cantillon but never see it in Florida.

I'm also getting into the sours... Mmmm

I just looked at the first page of this thread and noted the date 01/30/2013. We are now into our ninth month!
I am raising my mug up as a toast to Channing, Strange, and the other top posters for making this thread the best Beer thread ever! Every time time I click on here I find it friendly, educational, and enjoyable. This thread is the pub inside of The Pub. The best thing about stopping in here for a round or two or three is that I don't have to worry about the DUI checkpoints after I leave.

Now if we can just get some beer nuts in here.

Cheers!

Last night I had the new sweetwater dank tank series, danktoberfest. Was a nice, complex beer. I recommend. Also had the hitachino nest egg white ale. Also a great beer.

Think I might crack into some more 3 Floyd's tonight.

Finally had a Boulevard Double Wide IPA last night. Followed it with a leftover DFH 90. The Double Wide was surprisingly well balanced. Very pleasant but possibly to well balanced. Nothing really stuck out. Made the features of DFH 90 stand out more than usual, the thickness and mouthfeel, the citrusy hops and toasty malt. Probably should have had it before dinner. I drank it while watching my favorite show, Person of Interest. I'd eaten a pretty spicy Chinese dinner.

I lived two years in Flanders, Belgium going to graduate school (U of Gent). You could drink a different beer everyday and not repeat in a year. I had a friend there who when I saw him in our little village would say things like, "You must stop by. I have a very nice Trappiste we must try." His job was selling wastewater treatment chemicals to breweries. Got product samples everywhere he went.

Loved your post but drinking beer and the words "wastewater treatment should never be in the same paragraph".

Haha. I can understand that!

One interesting thing was whenever we visited a company in Belgium, after the tour they always served coffee if in the morning or beer if in the afternoon.

Picked up some Two Hearted Ale for the game. Forgot how smooth it is. Too smooth. Needed to switch back to Maximus to pace myself. I should probably just drink THA in certain blowouts.

Just poured a Hop Wallop by Victory. Initial taste for me is hints of citrus and sort of a floral taste, with pine also. Can really feel the hops in this one. Taste just a tad of sweetness but not too much, but balances it out nicely.

Definitely one of my favorites of the last few months. I'll be buying it again after I finish this 6 pack.

That's an excellent beer. It's been over a year since I had one, but your description reminded me how much I enjoyed it. Seems like I was drinking it during one or more of the Gators' losses last year. Bet I'd enjoy it even more with a win.

Finishing the six pack of Two Hearted Ale I bought for the game yesterday. Nice way to wrap up the weekend.

Two hearted is one of my favorites, and it helps that it's readily available.

I've only had Orval one time a couple of years ago in California. Tell you the truth I don't remember the experience much. Probably because I've had it in conjunction with a few other beers.

I don't want to do that. I have too much love for this University and these players and for what we've built." - Urban Liar
