Played this clip for my brother who lived in Dakar, Senegal for three years. He was very impressed with Joel's demeanor and growing command of the language. Based on his first and last name, he thinks Joel is likely a member of an ethnic subgroup that is primarily Catholic and well placed in government and including the current president.
During the time they were there, basketball was beginning to overtake soccer as the nation's most popular sport. As many great players as we've seen come out of this country over the years, it should start to explode soon.
Recruiting might not be a stretch for us. UF is quite visible in Senegal and throughout Africa. Gator grads, even Gator clubs are all over the continent. UF's graduate African Studies program (where my brother met his wife) is one of the most respected in the US and a very popular destination for people on their way up in the military and the state department. Might not be a bad place to place our basketball GAs. If there are any French speaking high school basketball coaches, you might want to take a look at opportunities in the region. Delta has direct flights between Atlanta and Dakar.
