I much rather have a smaller defensive lineman come in at 275 who has the quickness AND the strength... and then, bulk up to 290 and not loose a lot of that speed.
Ivey has that instinctiveness and that speed. We got some good 300 lb "Hole Pluggers" like Jacobs and Hunter who don't truly have great speed... but they play a key role in our defense.
(Look how many times Alabama's defensive tackles would slide down from the other side and tackle Rainey for a loss....jeeez!)

Ivey may not have that bulk now... but I can see him, after a couple of years, moving inside...
Very, very hard to teach instictiveness and speed...
As we watch Ivey's film... you see that he has got that... nice!

Ivie won't have to gain all that weight to make an impact. He'll be effective on the outside, then he'll get bigger and be effective on the inside.

I agree. Like a lot of guys he'll be getting bigger, and better, while he's at UF. A player that will be remembered.

Anxious to hear about Ivie's progress in the weight room. Was excited to hear that Robinson had already gained eight pounds. I'd still like for him to play outside his first year, but we're playing bigger SSDEs than in previous years. I think the ideal is 285 or so, with our DTs between 295 and 305.

As far as how much weight he can gain, remember that Jaye Howard played his senior year in high school at 245, but gained 50 pounds his first two years at UF, eventually blowing up to over 300.

Tim Newton was a 210 pound LB in high school, then gained 100 pounds at UF to become one of the best NTs in UF history.

Ivie is exceptionally strong, so I'm not too concerned about his weight right now, especially if he stays outside. 270 is more than enough for a guy with the pound-for-pound strength he possesses.

He won't stay 270 on UF's meal plan. Get him up to 285 by fall and he could be ready for serious PT at SSDE, especially if Bullard moves inside. Strength is great, but having a few extra pounds will help you stand your ground facing right OTs in the SEC.

I expect Ivey to stat out at DE and like stange says eat his way into a DT. I think Bullard stays outside at DE this year

Makes sense. Bullard was only 271 last fall and played very well there. A lot of us are eager to move guys inside with Hunter and Floyd leaving, but we actually have more people coming in at DT than we have leaving. We need to appreciate the talent at strong side DE and the role those guys play on our defense. They need to be great run stoppers and be able to contain the QB in the direction he's most likely to run.

Yeah I am not sure why people are in a rush to move Bullard and Fowler inside both are staying at their current positions for now

Because I think we need somebody at the DT position who can get to the QB. Bullard is a monster. He was better at getting to the QB than I expected in limited action, and when you look at Jacobs, Orr, Easley and Cummings, I'm just not sure anyone of them-except Easley-can get the push Floyd did against the pass. Also, Easley lines up both at end and at tackle. Floyd didn't get a whole lot of sacks, but he pushed people backwards, and he constantly made sure that you knew he was in the game.

I agree that not everyone of these guys needs to be moved inside, but I think it's worth taking a look at what Bullard can do in there.

Now, how am I supposed to answer that? The coaches are going to have to evaluate the personnel, see who can get a push inside, and decide whether or not they're comfortable enough with who they have, and whether or not to move somebody else inside to do what they want to do. For all we know, Easley may end up starting on the strong side. Or any one of Ivie/Riles/Williams could be the best option there. Or Bullard. Neither one of us can answer that question.

I'm just saying it might be worth a look to see what Bullard gives us inside. He has the frame to add about ten more pounds, and I think he'd be an animal inside.

He has the frame to add about ten more pounds, and I think he'd be an animal inside.
ok but the logical thing to do is move Easley back inside play him next to Orr and have Bullard at DE and Powell/Fowler at BUCK.

The staff told Riles Bullard was going to play DE

I would leave Bullard at end and fowler/Powell at buck all day long without thinking about it and move Easley inside with his first step and see which one steps up to go alongside him. I'm not worried one bit. I'm looking forward to see the impact our new de coach has on the ends. We need our pass rush to step up and I think it will with the guys we have. Jmo
