My roommate and I played the first Diablo in the late nineties until all hours of the night. We were ridiculously addicted to it.

Anyone get a shot at this yet? I can't get my copy until I get out of work (thinking about having a case of "eye troubles") Just wanted to see if anyone here has a first impression review yet ...

The first one was and the 2nd one was somewhat less so IMHO. Apparently they've changed a lot of the interface to make it far more strategy based (it has been 12 years since the last one).

Read that. Apparently it is only with the Demon Hunter class and only when taking a piece of equipment off a Templar at a specific point in the game. Looks like they missed a bug during beta testing.

Does the server need to be up for simply a single player game? Or is the entire game played online? Seems like with a game taking up >15GB it would run in a standalone instance.
I'm likely to start with the Barbarian class I think.
EDIT: I'm installing it now so I'm likely to be off the boards for a little while
EDIT #2: FML, the servers are down for "maintenance" until 3:30 PDT.

Ok, my first impressions:
Graphics: Stunning as always from Blizzard
Interface: Somewhat awkward at first, but fairly easy to get used to if you played the older ones (hotkeys haven't changed). Higher level of detail than in the past when debating between weapons, armor, etc.
Gameplay: Slightly dumbed down (though not in a bad way). At least as a barbarian it is. While I love the fact you don't have to highlight every little piece of gold dropped, you no longer get to choose what attribute to increase when leveling up. Like the idea of the auction house for trading.
Game still feels a little bit like "hack and slash" compared to what D2 was. Not quite as much strat as I expected from the previews (at least early on ... maybe that changes as you get more high level).

You don't get to choose what attributes to increase ?!? That was half of the game in DII
I still play through a new character in DII probably once a year. I think that was one of the most perfect games ever made (along with Civ II and X-Com:Ufo Defense).
I never really liked playing multiplayer online (in DII or really any other game that I've tried), so the fact that DIII was built for multiplayer online has me a little worried about the single player experience, any comments on that?

The single player is actually very close to what it was in both DI and DII with a few interface changes. I've just finished Act I and there even a lot of carryover in the monsters from DII (named differently, but they're still quite similar)

I find this to be highly annoying. That they essentially recycled stories and content *again* bugs me.
Even how act 2 opens up in the desert feels stale to me.

Your condescending remarks aside, no I don't have a 5yo machine (my last build was about 2-3 years ago and it's plenty for this game). And compared to a lot of what is out there, the graphics are top notch. "Graphics" are far more than pixels and resolution. It's detail, it's artistry, and it's depth. Blizzard has been known for this for quite some time and this game is no different. It's not Crysis or BF3, but still extremely well done as we've come to expect from Blizzard.

I almost bought it today but chickened out. 60 bucks is so much to pay for a video game. Sticker shock gets me unless I know a game is phenomenal.

Probably not worth the full $60 unless you're a huge fan of the original (i.e., "you just have to have it"). I'd wait 6 months and you'll get it for half that.

I wouldn't count on that.
Blizzard is notorius for not lowering the sticker price. Starcraft still 45.99 cheapest after almost a year(10 months)
