Are you sitting down for this ? I hope not!
This is getting crazy. The latest sitting study shows that people who sit 11 hours or more a day are at 40% greater risk of dying, in the next three years, as those who sit four hours or less a day. This is controlled for exercise, weight and health status:

I've read/heard about studies like this before and it's definitely scary. Maybe I've heard wrong, but doesn't getting up and walking around for a few minutes every hour reduce a lot of the risk? I guess what I'm asking is, isnt it worse for people who are sitting those 11 hours for longer periods of time like 3-4 hours consecutively

For example, prolonged sitting causes insulin to rise. And a few minutes of walking serves to restore insulin to normal levels. BUT, activity of that sort appears to be factored into the study and we're being asked to believe that total sitting time REGARDLESS activity is the problem.

Well that's no good. I wonder if sitting on one of those big fitness balls helps at all? My boss brought one in and I sat on it for a couple of hours, definitely felt a little strain in muscles I dont normally use sitting but got dizzy from trying to read while the damn thing kept bouncing.
I wonder what the increase is from those who sit 8-11 hours a day.
Also it should probably be noted that while one is 40% more likely to die in 3 years sitting that much, the original liklihood one was going to die in the next 3 years probably isnt all that high to begin with, but definitely worth considering.

I myself am waiting for a calm analysis of these studies. There are folks out there who are skeptical about these dire warnings.
Meantime, since almost everybody I work with sits 11 or more hours a day, I'm hedging my bets (or maybe their bets) and asking them to think not only in terms of moving more but ALSO in terms of finding ways to sit less.

Is this true??? Then I'm going to die pretty soon as well. All I do is sit down and do my work in front of the computer.

I got a standing desk after that last "Standing is killing you" 1950's looking propaganda piece that went around last fall.
I have a tall stool so I can sit, too. At first I stood all the time. Now, I sit when I start my day in the morning and when I return from lunch, but within an hour or so, I stand up. So I'm probably around 5 hours of my 8 hour day standing. I dig it.
