You need the cheapest HDMI cables you can find. You can buy $80 6-foot Monster cable, or you can buy $10 6-foot Amazon cable. Nothing will be different.
I don't know if you'll need digital optical. That would depend upon your components and TV.

+1 True about the cheapest HDMI cables. In spite of the marketing, those overpriced cables don't improve performance. Go by Walmart or some other discount store and get the cheapest ones you can find with enough length. You only may need the optical if whatever else you have is older and doesn't have HDMI connectors. Just connect everything you can with HDMI and see what you have left and check out the connectors to see what you can use. I assume that you have the system hooked up now including your old TV, so it may be the same except the TV connections. Most of what you have other than the TV and cable box will hook to or through your amp.

Look on eBay and you can get a lot (bundle) of like 20 for 10$. Katies boss jokes about how much target rakes in on HDMI cable sales.

Also depending on your set up you probably wont need that long of a cable so you can probably get away with a well reviewed 3ft or 6ft cable on Amazon for under $10. The only issues I have read about from the cheaper cables is at larger distances they are not as good and that some of them tend be on the stiff side. So, I would check reviews on whatever cables you choose to see if anyone has any gripes that may affect you.
Also, if going the Amazon route make sure to double check the delivery. Some of their third party stuff is super cheap but can take a month to be delivered because it is coming from China. Same issue can appear on ebay.

My receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs, so I run hdmi from my cable box to my LED tv.. then a fiber optic digital audio cable from the cable box to the receiver for the sound. The TV will actually also play sound so i just have the volume all the way down on the TV and let the receiver / 5.1 speakers handle the sound.
I've also compared HD Component vs HDMI and couldn't tell any difference at all... Tried on 2 different tv's with hd cable box and with blue ray player. If you can find a HD component cables cheaper than HDMI might as well go for that. Only real advantage I see for HDMI is sounds + video in 1 cable, but if your reciever is older and you need fiber optic audio then go with whatever is cheaper.

Got this bad boy going All I can say is this set will blow your mind. Straight out of the box did not have to change a thing. The 3D is something else. 55 inch 1080 p plasma for $900.00 plus 180 for 2 pair glasses. This was delivered to my door free. My grandson came out and got it going for me. Anyone looking for a tv can not praise this set enough. No one could touch Sears price on this set
Thx for all the advice on HDMI cables. Got a set from Walmart the cheapest set was 19.00 but did not want to wait a couple days to save a few dollars

Tilts--but doesn't reticulate(I think that is the word--move from side to side) Same quality as the ones for $150-$200 at Best Buy and elsewhere.
Cables--I like to be prepared for nearly every possibility so a few months ago I loaded up with HDMI, component cables, audio, optical, etc.....about 35 different configurations of cables in various lengths--spent $40 for the whole group.
Jag is spot on with his post--monoprice.com is the only place to even consider. Period.
