wdbg8r is a glorious beacon of light
Default Software for recording guitar=songs

My son plays bass and guitar and wants an 8 track recorder for Christmas. I was wondering about a computer program that records and edits. What suggestions are out there?

Depends on how much you want to spend.
Here's one of the cheaper solutions.

Ideal for use with Ableton® Live, Cubase®, Logic®, Garageband®, Pro Tools®, Cakewalk® and other pro (software based) recording platforms

Includes Ableton® Live Lite Line 6 Studio Edition 8-track recording software and RiffWorks™ T4 recording software for instant pro recording and idea capture right out of the box

Line 6 also makes higher end models.

Line6 is not the best audio interface. Most of them come with some light version of the above software. I've never been an Ableton person, either. Some of them come with Cubase.

I've used a bunch of these. The best I've ever found for < $200 is the Lexicon Lambda. This comes with Cubase, which is a little intimidating at first but a fine, established multitracker.

Stay away from the Tascam stuff. I've had to give away two Tascam interfaces. I have an internal (non-USB) M-Audio interface so I can at least vouch for that company and they have a few affordable options.
