Unhappy UF's 1st SEC Championship Forgotten

25th Anniversary & No Remembrance:

The players on the 84 team deserve better. So will 85 and 90 when they come up.

If it's true there was no official commemorization of this great team, it is unfortunate. I saw this team play in person and it remains one of the great Gator squads. These players and coaches had little to do, if anything, with the NCAA sanctions. They were the best on the field in both the SEC and nation that year. To ignore their achievements, is a sad omission in my opinion. It's as if they didn't exist.

The loss of our '84 SEC Championship is a travesty along with '85 and '90, because the SEC does not strip other teams of championships when they get hit with NCAA sanctions. That is a penalty that is seemingly reserved for the Gators.

I certainly won't forget it. Not that it matters but I'll always consider us the SEC champions that year and I always count it as an SEC championship when we add them up. Why? Because other SEC schools, including the schools that we beat to get the championship in the first place, got to decide whether we kept it or not. Talk about a rigged jury - it doesn't get any worse than that.
