Default How to buy a motherboard?

Hey Gators -

So my wife's old HP Pavilion won't boot up, and from my testing, it appears the motherboard may have failed. I'm not that surprised since it is almost 8yrs old. The power supply works, but it just won't crank up! So I need some help - how do I buy a new motherboard? The OEM board has integrated video and an Intel P4 2.93Ghz processor. Since this is my wife's PC and she just uses it for surfing the web, email, and Outlook, it doesn't need to be ultrafast. What do I need to keep in mind when buying a replacement?

Thanks!

newegg.com and check the ratings...

gigabyte and asus make a good 'board

verify it'll work with your existing ram and cpu. you should be able to get away for under 50 bucks

Make sure you know which socket type it is so the old cpu will fit on to the board.

Newegg gives you a good section to choose from depending on what you want on the board. I'm assuming your chip has a 775 socket. I would check to make sure that is correct. Next, check the other connections like the memory slots, graphics card slot and hard drive connectors to make sure its compatible and on the board you are going to buy.

Thanks gs - big fan of newegg.com and had already looked at some combo deals.

umc - much appreciated, thanks for the links.

So would you guys recommend that I just buy the motherboard and use the old cpu, or would you buy a new motherboard and cpu together with ram? I know that means a few more dollars, but the computer is old and I'm wondering if I should just replace the motherboard, cpu, and ram too?

If it was me, I'd buy a new computer because the advances are so far ahead of what it was with the Pentium 4. Lower TDP, higher efficiencies, etc...

You should be able to build a decent computer for about $500, unless you are gaming or something like it.

Verify that it will fit in the case also. Many OEM boards have non-standard sizing or mounting points.

I'm with the other guy that says just get a new computer though.

you won't find anything new that supports the cpu and/or memory in the hp...the cpu is probably socket 478 and memory is original ddr...not to mention the power supply will probably be missing the 4/8pin connector to power the cpu...I 3rd the suggestion to build/buy a new one

G8rcb you are correct about the challenge of finding a board supporting my cpu (775) and memory (ddr). After much searching for a new, compatible board with no luck, I actually found a new, OEM replacement board on ebay for $40 - it should arrive today. Keeping fingers crossed - otherwise the next step will be a new PC.
