ET, do you ever wonder why USCe doesn't finish out the regular season? It has little to do with Spurrier or the players.
Year----------------First Six Games--------------Last Six
2000..............................5-1.............................2-3
2001..............................5-1.............................3-2
2002..............................4-2.............................1-5
2003..............................4-2.............................1-5
2004..............................4-2.............................2-3
2005..............................3-3.............................3-2
2006..............................4-2.............................3-3
2007..............................5-1.............................1-5
2008..............................4-2.............................3-3
2009..............................5-1.............................1-5*
Total.............................43-17 (.717).................20-35 (.364)
* Florida and Clemson will be heavily favored, so this is an educated guess.
Spurrier didn't get them ready to go 10-2 any more than Holtz did. The reason for the late season swoons have nothing to do with the Gamecocks.
USCe's last three opponents are:
Tennessee............2-8
Florida.................1-8
Clemson...............2-7
Arkansas..............4-6
Total....................9-29 (soon to be 9-31, in all likelihood).
A 9-31 record is a .225 winning percentage. That is the reason why USCe folds late in the year. So if Spurrier is going to get USCe "past that" as well, he is going to have to beat Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida and Clemson more often. He's had five years, and still haven't gotten over that hump. Those teams pretty much own the Gamecocks, who beat them only when they are down.
