Veterans Day Challenge
Do you walk the walk or do you just talk the talk. Let's get out there and support our troops. I know a lot of you live near bases, reserve centers and National Guard Armories.
Helping bring soldiers home for holidays
B&W Y-12, the government's contractor at Y-12, and Wackenhut Services, the Oak Ridge security contractor, have each pledged $1,500 to help bring members of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment of the Tennessee Army National Guard (in Clinton) home for the holidays.
According to Ryn Etter of B&W, the money will go toward the $5,700 cost of chartering a bus to bring 48 soldiers to and from Camp Shelby in Mississippi, where they'll be stationed in December while preparing for deployment to Iraq.
The holiday idea was conceived by Y-12 employees Larry Brown and Tim Morris, Etter said.
"Brown and Morris began contacting Anderson County, city of Clinton, city of Oak Ridge and NNSA contractors B&W Y-12 and Wackenhut Services to put together a community committee to help the soldiers and their families," according to info distributed by B&W.
B&W said additional non-tax deductible donations are being accepted at Y-12, Wackenhut, and the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce. Any funds above the amount needed for transportation will go towards the purchase of items for the troops and family support.
