Default Vandy Game: The good, the bad, and the ugly

I didn't see a similar thread following yesterday's game, so I'll post my thoughts here. Feel free to fire away at anything here.

The good: The defense. I especially thought Stamper played well filling in for Spikes, and Omar Hunter's play leaves me more optimistic UF can hold their own against Bama's running game in the SECCG. The offense is using WR screens to counter blitzing defenses on first down. Its about time, if they add a few quick slants we can make defenses really pay for attacking the runs on first down! Finally, unlike the last few games which had injuries and controversial officiating and eye-gate, there are no major news stories coming out of the game. And between now and Atlanta, no news is good news.

The bad: The meerkat is back. On an unrelated note, the offense was flat and out of sync again.

The ugly: Nothing is ugly about a team this team at 9-0. But I thought there was one unit that was very flat and uninspired yesterday...the crowd. Too many empty seats, and very little noise and emotion throughout the game. A #1 team playing a conference game at home in November deserves better. But its a moot point now since the remaining major tests are all away from Gainesville.

Well, if the crowd is not there and fired up for the FSU game, I will really be disappointed

it was 2-7 vandy and a night game. Very few people are going to travel for that game.

The crowd wasn't really into the game because the offense didn't do anything to bring us into the game. Our first couple possessions yielded nothing and we had a total of 3 points in the first quarter and no big plays. Tebow didn't do his pump up the crowd routine and was sacked a couple times, which definitely quiets the crowd. And Brodeur, when you referenced "the bad", you were being sarcastic about the unrelated note right?

^^^Bingo on the Tebow remark. Last night, we all commented about every time the camera zoomed in on Tim when he was sideline--the smile, the pumped up look, the normal old "Tim"...was not present. He simply didn't look happy. Only once did he look like his old self, or like he did last week--that was on the TD catch I believe. Maybe a second time when Hernandez made his long run after the catch...and Tim seemed to be asking Urban for "one more play"---there was a smile then.

But overall, Tim didn't have that look as if he was having fun out there like we have all come to enjoy over the years. Of course among my group, the pondering questions of "why" was being talked about. Is he unhappy at "his" performance--is he unhappy at the playcalling---is he feeling the pressure after all these years and it is getting to his demeanor and pysche---just why is Tim not looking happy at all anymore??

Anyone else notice Tim's lack of facial expressions, or was it just us being negative??

Yes. I know its difficult to detect sarcasm on a message board, but that was my attempt to lighten the mood and not sound like a total downer. I apologize to those that didn't pick up on it.

You do know that the attendance was 90,645 so not very many empty seats.

Pretty fair assessment Brodeur: agree that our defense played pretty good by and large and our DL is definitely playing at a very high level. And loved seeing a few WR screens to counter the threat of the blitz: they were good almost every time for around 5 yards. Thought Moody was impressive yet again--and also liked how we ran a few plays with Tebow under center again. At least one of those times there was a playaction pass to Hernandez (who was another star for us yesterday). Defenses are very caught off guard when we use it, so its something I think we'll be doing a bit more of down the stretch.

And yes--why in the world did the "meerkat offense" make its return yesterday? It definitely slows down the rhythem of our team and rather than build off its performance against Georgia, I think our offense kinda regressed a bit yesterday.

We were at the game and it was the dullest so far this season. Of course it didn't help that there wasn't much action at our side of the field.

I'm beginning to think that the sacks are Tebow's responsibility. In the last series, Brantley was making the throw decision very fast and the ball was getting out of his hands to the receiver in short order. It seems like Tebow is taking too long to find the open man maybe thinking that he can scramble out of trouble. Sometimes he can... sometimes he can't.

Under the GOOD category....you left out our special teams unit!!!

Field goals and kickoffs by Caleb Sturgis and punting by Chas Henry - #1 in the nation and one of the keys to our continued success.

I don't know if it's good or bad, but I did notice alot of experimenting on offense. Some I-formation, some different personnel early (Hines and Hammonds), some different looks with rotating O-line personnel. I think the staff used the Vandy game almost like an O&B game, but there's still no excuse for 3 points in the first 15 minutes against an average Vandy D.

The Gator offense and defense were flat in the first quarter.

The crowd was flat too. I almost got the impression that someone moved The Swamp to Las Angelas and a Southern California crowd had filled the seats.

On Vandy's second possession Charile Strong made his usual great adjustments and the Gator D shut down Vandy.

The Gator O was not fired up. There appeared to be let down from the Ga/Fl game.
There were some dropped passes and stupid penalites.
By the second half it appeared that Teebow did not trust the pass blocking from the O-line (and he had a good reason or two). A few of the sacks on Teebow were his fault. Instead of dumping the ball out of bounds Teebow tried to force a play.

Good adjustments by the Gator O coaches on Vandy's blitzes. Getting the ball to the outside negated the pass rush. This is similar to the old bubble screens we saw a few season ago.

I would of liked to see the Gator O line up in the modifed version of the I formation. Having Demps or Moddy in that formation would be deadly. Giving these guys the extra yard or two creates some too hard to defend running angles. I believe that Meyer is hold this formation for the Bama game. Why use it now (and for the next three games) if we do not need it. Besides it will give Bama too many looks and time to figure out how to defend it.

watching the Patriots and Dolphins yesterday, saw New England insert a sixth lineman and then throwing out of it.

I've been looking for this all season, but imagine we became limited once Patchan went down and Trattou got hurt.

Would still think that with at least 6 trusted offensive lineman that we could give that a shot again.

It was a mainstay of our offense for years with guys like Trautwein, Watkins and Johnson getting their initial snaps in that role.

Maybe Nixon's the one!!!

The stadium was not riddled with empty seats, 90k+. There were some earlier-than-usual departures, but to say "very few people" would travel to the game is ridiculous.

The energy level was low, no question about that.

If you want to see an empty stadium watch a replay of the Miami game.

Good - Tebow, he's always good
Bad - O-line, still need to stay on your blocks longer
Ugly - James, He played great on O but he still hasn't taken one to the house on kick-offs.
