Blogging's sort of like a new toy for people who like to write, communicate or otherwise exchange ideas with other like minded people on various topics. With some hesitation I initiated one on GC this past January. There were some things I wanted to share that didn't necessarily fit into the category of Too Hot or the Pub so I took the advantage offered through GC and began to blog.
I don't feel entirely comfortable doing it and haven't made any entries since last May. In some ways it's a somewhat narcissistic venture as truly, how many of us really care what other people think on any given topic. I still write quite a bit but most of my thoughts stay locked within my journal. An entry I made last April addresses some of the issues I had with myself about blogging. If you care to read it you can find it here

The Internet is saturated with all sorts of blogs with subject matter that finds a readership niche. There are a number of them I follow on various topics and each one offers something not found in ordinary mainstream journalism. Many blogs maintain their early expectations and continue to produce musings that are worth regular reading. But the writers of some of the more brilliant ones exhaust their creative genius early in the game and cannot sustain the level of excellence on a regular basis their readership came to expect. These may devolve into monotonous day to day accounts that waste space (if there is such a thing) on the 'Net.
This AT&T push you mentioned is new to me. But then again I don't watch much TV or listen to any radio besides selected channels on Sirius. Yeah, I'm persnickety about how I spend my time and dispense my attention. But I can see where blogs might have an appeal also for the kind of people who like to write Christmas letters. You know the type - the ones that tell you Johnnie, Jr. won his class spelling bee and sister Susie was 3rd runner-up homecoming princess and they all went to Acapulco last year on vacation. They don't of course tell you anything about John Sr's. out of control drinking or Mom's affair with the assistant manager of Jiffy Lube.
Blogging is relatively easy to do. A little time is spent on the set up and most any breathing body with a computer and access to the 'Net is good to go. Lots of quantity but not much quality as is such with most of what we deal with on a day to day basis. The discrimination comes in what we allow ourselves to give our attention. A little more persnicketiness, please.
