Why do we always take 3's in critical situations?

End of half/end of game? I mean we were down 1, why take a contested 3?

So many times in these situations it's not even a "rhythm" 3 as part of our offense. It's just a BAD three point shot.

Even the 3 that Wilbekin actually made to put UF up 1, that should be considered a "bad" shot because it was a step-back 3 and the guy had a hand in his face.

Now obviously this issue has not come up all that much this season given how few close games we've had, however it seems like it's becoming a bit of a trend that HOPEFULLY Billy D gets on top of. Somehow and emphasis needs to be put on either our guards getting into the lane, or getting Patrick Young/Eric Murphy to do more work in the lane (with Murphy since I"m sure opposing D's put so much emphasis on him shooting the 3 he might get more chances to do a little dive to the basket like he did 1 time today).

Billy himself at halftime said his team fell in love with 3's instead of taking it inside to Young.

I said it in another thread, but our guards have trouble beating their man off the dribble when Billy's high ball screen offense is being defended well. Usually results in us settling for a three pointer when we can't get the ball inside either.

If you've seen py shoot fts, you know why he'll not be getting clutch touches. Boynton or wilbekin forced 3s have better odds of going in than two py fts.

But yeah... if the intent is to drive in those situations, Billy's guys ignore those plans an inordinate amount of the time.

I'm really shocked by how KB isn't willing to drive more. I don't think he was ever known as a great shooter in HS, but a great scorer. So I would think he'd have more floaters and what not.

It takes discipline to work the ball around, find whoever is cutting to the rim, and be patient enough to trust Young, Murphy and Prather when they're down low. For all the good Wilbekin does, he just doesn't have the vision to find the open man quite like some of the elite PGs in college basketball can. Not yet, anyway.

Oh well, credit Mizzou for really clamping down late in the game.

florida's offense is built around finesse, three point shots---they have little inside presence.

This is the craziest thing of all. It's been going on for years. I have no idea why it happens. Our regular offense is excellent, and I have no idea why we do something totally different at the end of every half. Very strange.

It's extremely frustrating. We run terrific offense and great plays all day, then look like a Dale Brown club in the last four minutes. I just don't get it.

Roberson begat Walker, who begat Boynton. Hero shooters, every one. Green was the exception since the 2000 team. That worked well.

It's cooler to shoot than to pass. 3-pointers are cooler than 2-pointers.

Billy says he told Scottie to drive so okay that is an excuse this time. But every situation where it will be a buzzer beater ends up being a 3. The trend is Billy as the coach. Don't get me wrong, he's GREAT. But he needs to be more demanding from the players in these situations.

I think Billy does need to look at this.
I have little doubt that many of the end of game shots we have seen over the years ---whether it be nelson, roberson, walker or boynton --- were not a reflection of what billy wanted.
what I think happens is that billy's offense allows for a fair amount of freedom and in-play decision making. He extends this to these end game situations. I am not sure that is a great idea.
I think kids panic and may not make the same decision in those scenarios--- with the clock ticking down--- as they would in the normal flow of a game. I do not think those shots were borne of selfishness as often as nerves and poor decisions.
I would like to see Billy pull back the reigns a bit there and draw up designed plays as opposed to putting the ball in the guards hands and asking him to create or get to the hoop.
Granted, i am not in the huddle ---and i am certainly simplifying billy's instructions. But there is a latitude being afforded in these scenarios that has resulted in less-than desirable results.

I don't have a problem with the 3s. the problem is that the 3s don't look like they are coming from within the flow of the offensive design. Or perhaps that they are being forced a bit early.

in the arizona game we had a possession where we were down one or two with like 30 seconds left and we ran a patient set and Rosario hit a 3 with like 11 seconds left and gave us a 1 point lead. it was an absolutely beautiful possession especially considering the road game factor.

the 3 is not the problem.
