Abrams to direct star wars VII
Interesting move. Curious about the cast now.

I think JJ is a great choice! He would not have put up with Jar Jar Binks!

That sucks. After the way he messed up the Star Trek Universe I hope he doesn't do the same to Star Wars.

Yeah, let's take the guy that took a dump on the other major sci fi franchise and give him the reins here.
Awesome.

His was the only trek I'd ever seen and i liked it. But I know that's not popular around here.

I liked his take on Star Trek as well. It was refreshing. The other was getting stale.

I loved his take on Star Trek and I had never cared for Star Trek before the new movie. I am excited.

It wasn't the style of the movie, who he cast etc. I am fine with a younger reboot that way. It was the fact that the plot basically invalidated everything the movie was founded on.

After the fact, they did say it was an alternate universe.

Well, I liked it. I liked what they did. What they gonna do bring in a 200 year old storyline and William Shatner?

He turned Trek into Wars, right down to the Hoth ice planet and Scotty's Ewok.
Boo.

He make a Star Trek movie for people who didn't like Star Trek, can't imagine that will go over well with Star Wars.

Abram's Star Trek was awful from the evil constipated Romulan bad guy on his throne, Spock dating Uhera (Spock is married during this time from in The Original Series), to the final conflict where Spock has to fight Kirk. Bad enough Abrams completely erased TOS, but he totally crapped on Rodenberry's vision. Rodenberry wanted "Wagon Train to the Stars," and Abrams delivered Die Hard on a Spaceship.
Fortunately, Abrams can't make the Star Wars universe worse than the prequels already did.

He won't have nearly as much control over the Star Wars sequel. The executive producer will have him reigned in tight. He's a great director if there are other people around him to button up the details, especially the writing. He usually writes or co-writes his own films. In this case, he'll have very little input into the script. He'll be surrounded by the best people in the business, including the screenwriter. This is not his project. He was the last person picked, except for the cast. He may not even have a big part in choosing the cast, but he's actually pretty good at that.
FWIW, I liked the Star Trek reboot. He took a lot of liberties, but it was a fun movie. The previous films got too caught up in the rules and roles.

You're not wrong about his Trek movie, but it was an alternate timeline, so Spock's betrothal would not necessarily be relevant. Here's just a small list of why the movie sucked:
--Abrams already did that red matter plot point in the tv show Alias.
--The Romulan ship goes back in time because Romulus is destroyed. And then sits and waits in the same spot for 25 years until old Spock arrives?
--Enterprise warps to Vulcan and arrives there in seconds. But the ride back to earth takes days.
--Enterprise somehow passes the Romulan ship headed to earth and waits to ambush it by Saturn.
--Too many similarities to Star Wars series--ice planet, battle with snow monster in/near a cave, Scotty's Ewok.
--A Romulan mining ship from Picard's era has enough firepower to destroy the entire fleet from Kirk's era?
--Cadets had to go fight because entire fleet was off doing something else in the same area. Unless it was a Klingon or Borg attack, this makes no sense.
--No matter what the disagreement, one Starfleet officer wouldn't exile another by spacepod. He'd just be thrown in the brig for disciplinary procedures.
