Default External monitor on laptop, computer forgets settings

I have a Dell Latitude E6520 with an NVIDIA NVS 4200M. I have an Acer G235H plugged into it, extending the display. Every 5-8 times the computer goes to sleep, when I wake it up it forgets the settings and the external monitor will be mirroring the laptop.

Any ideas on why? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

This is certainly not the sort of behavior for a modern household appliance. I don’t have any great ideas or suggestions but just a couple of questions.

Are you setting the monitor using the Windows or Nvidia control panel? The latter seems to occasionally conflict with Windows from my very limited experience with it.

I assume the laptop has a function key that allows you to set the way the second monitor port is used. I assume there is no way that is being pressed or invoked, somehow?

It might be helpful for you to let the gentle and smart readers here know what version of Windows you are using.

Hopefully, one of them will give some good ideas of a resolution soon.

Setting the monitor using the Nvidia control panel. (I'll try it through the control panel and see what happens)

Function keys not being pressed. Sometimes it happens when I have closed the machine to put it to sleep, sometimes it happens when I have left it long enough that it goes to sleep.

Windows 7.

Check your power saver settings. It might help.
