GAINESVILLE, Fla.- The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, on behalf of its donors and race fans, donated two custom wheelchairs collectively valued at $33,000 to individuals in need at the Amalie Oil Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. on March 17. The donations were made during the foundation’s annual “Track Walk for Those Who Can’t” at the Auto Plus Raceway. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.
The first donation was a $26,000 a custom power wheelchair to Wesley Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla. Wesley was injured in a car accident in 2009 and sustained a spinal cord injury. His old wheelchair is a manual wheelchair which he cannot use because of the partial loss of the use of his hands. Medicaid denied his claim for the power wheelchair he needs. His new wheelchair will give him the independence he needs.
The second wheelchair donation was a $7,000 custom manual wheelchair to Zynetta Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla. Zynetta was also injured in a car accident. Her current wheelchair is in disrepair and she needed a new wheelchair to go back to work at Bank of America as a freelance graphic designer and complete her bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. With the donation by DGF she will be able to go back to work and school.
