People loved Reagan because he was pro-business AND protected Social Security. The masses will not vote for candidates who want to solve our fiscal issues out of the futures of the middle and lower classes.
It all depends on how you define extreme.
They win if they go "extreme" on economic issues. They lose if they go "extreme" on social issues.
Middle America sympathizes far more with economic freedom than social religious control.
