Default Firefox back button

Is the round back button at the upper left of the Firefox browser supposed to work all the time? For me it seldom works at all, I usually have to go the History menu if I want to go back to a previous webpage.

I have Firefox 18.01, but I recall once reinstalling a previous version because of this problem. Reinstalling didn't fix it then, so I doubt there's any fix now.

No make matters worse, I recall that Firefox used to have a "Close Tab" you could click on to go back to the previous page, like IE has, but some genius at Firefox did away with that.

Anyone else have this problem of getting to a previous page with Firefox?
