It was my favorite movie and I thought it should have received more awards than it did, but I think there's this idea that Best Picture nominees have to be "Substantial" and
Moonrise Kingdom was light as a feather. That's what made it great and why I enjoyed it over and over again. Very glad that Anderson and Coppola got the writing nomination. Mark Boal will probably win for Zero Dark Thirty. It's a crime that the
Moonrise Kingdom wasn't nominated for Best Production Design. I thought the soundtrack was brilliant and maybe the best use of music in any film I saw this year. The problem with that soundtrack is that very little of it was original music.
IMHO, the biggest snub was Kathryn Bigelow not getting nominated for Best Director.
Always thought that editing was a weird thing to give awards for. Even editors agree. Nowhere else are editors given awards for their craft. That said,
Moonrise Kingdom should have been nominated. That montage that begins when the girl is discovered to be missing where they go back and forth between their families and them writing each other notes planning their escapes is a little masterpiece. Check it out here…
