You don't have to choose either. The best defenses protect the basket and the 3 point line. They let teams hoist 2 pt jumpers all day since those are the worst shots you can take: low % and still only worth 2 points instead of low % and worth 3.
That has been Donovan's defensive strategy since he arrived. Force teams into taking long twos by squeezing on the perimeter and sagging into the lane inside the arc. It works better when you have good shotblockers, or at least good shot "contesting" bigs who can defend the paint without fouling.
