People eat to excess so that they feel full. I make a point of eating stuff between meals that fills me up, grapes, berries, bananas, plus I drink a lot of water. Something I've been doing lately is eating a lot of romaine lettuce. I buy those huge packs at Costco with six heads in it. I cut up a head of romaine to to with almost every lunch and dinner, putting just a small amount of lite Caesar dressing. I fill up a lot faster that way. Much less likely to go for seconds on meat or pasta.
