Good post and thanks for your informed perspective. The unfortunate thing about our society is that in absence of such training, people are at much greater risk in the presence of firearms. If we have to be such a pro-gun society, it would be best for all citizens to be well-informed and well-trained. That's not reality, though. This is part of the reason why the calls to arm teachers are ridiculously dumb. (I know, off topic o_O)

Except the victim had zero control over any of those. They only thing he controlled was not opening the door holding a gun. It’s tragic, but those are the facts.

My point was, it’s legal to open your door with a gun at your side. Leaving your doorway, or perusing, with your gun is another legal matter.

You're missing the point. He wasn't breaking the law. If we are going to talk about who hypothetically could have taken what actions to avoid this, there will be a very long list on both sides. We can't just look at one potential thing the victim could have done differently and act as if that was the only thing that could have prevented it.

But that's fairly expected/common of a police officer in the USA, right? I'm not resident but it's what I would expect to be the case.
I also wouldn't hold a fire arm when approaching one for that exact reason.

It's all very sad but based on what I saw on the camera, it's hard to put substantive blame on the police officer, imo.

Lots of blame to go around. Only one person is dead though.

Cops can give, ground and seek cover if they feel threatened. No reason to murder that man

Cop shouldn’t have had his gun drawn. Dude shouldn’t have answered the door with his gun drawn. All of us shouldn’t have to live in a shithole country but this is what an absurd proliferation of firearms gets you. Everyone is afraid of getting shot.

This may be the first time when guns killed a person not people killing people.

Society and the victim were counting on the police officer to be properly trained and make appropriate decisions. To the extent blame rests with the airman, it was the fact he made those assumptions. He certainly won't make that mistake again, will he?

The really wild part is that the same group who want the right to bear arms to be absolute to protect citizens from overbearing authority figures are also the same group who will back the overbearing authority figures when they shoot citizens bearing arms.

I don't agree with you on that. I am part of the group you started with but as I have already posted I do not back any police officer that shoots someone like this guy did. That does not make me not like police officers, it makes me not like what this one did.

This thread proves otherwise. Nothing trumps guns. Not kids, not the blue, no matter how stupid and ridiculous the situation is, guns are never the problem.
