I’m sure the old Waldo Police dept was all “law and order” too. “Listen guyz, if you weren’t speeding we wouldn’t have to fine you”.

Bottom line is if you attach a profit motive to the concept of justice. You might no longer have justice. You may end up with a perversion of justice. First I heard about this sort of thing was the crooked deal prison systems have with “specialty” phone companies, they charge some exorbitant amount of money. While that also smelled of corruption for that sort of thing I did have a “too bad, so sad” attitude for the prisoner while they are imprisoned. But I think only a sick individual could take that POV for an egregious story like this when discussing a person who already served their sentence.

All this stuff is on the level of Waldo PD or those crooked tow companies in Gainesville. But actually far worse, as we are talking ruining lives rather than annoying inconvenience. So much for “second chances” I guess. Just don’t call yourselves Christians.

You make a decent point about law being tied to profit incentives but you go off the rails with your Christian hate.
Please. You don’t get to define what a Christian is or isn’t.

Actually, I don’t hate true Christians who live according to Christ. Too bad they are as rare as unicorns.

Reading isn’t your strong suit, is it? This about paying even AFTER they have been released and the state is no longer feeding or housing them. Please try to keep up.

Please actually read the article. They want to charge for the “space” even though those people are no longer in prison.

You’re the judge of who is a true Christian?
    Wow. That’s pretty cool.

As far as I know Marion County still charges inmates for rent for the time they spend in the County jail. Different than charging them for time they are no longer there of course. I have not spent any time in the Marion County jail myself but I do remember hearing a few years back that they charged the inmates for time they stayed there.

Oh, would I love to see how you would deal with Coleman Max. You would be crying for your mommy 5 minutes after the last door slid shut. I could sell tickets.

A mere 70 miles south of Gainesville.

"USP Coleman 1 is a high security federal lockup that houses several notorious and infamous criminals. Inmates at this facility consist of dozens of international terrorists, high profile drug and arms dealers and other serial and repeat offenders. Inmates housed here report extreme violence at this facility. According to one respondent, “General population is very violent, even against staff members.” Another explained, “The violence is terrible. People are regularly killed.” Another inmate agreed, stating, “Violence is very high, and safety is very poor.” Former inmates also report frequent lockdowns at this facility, due to the level of violence."

United States Penitentiary, Coleman - Wikipedia

It is the most intimidating facility I have been to. I would actually call before I left to go there and at least once on the way up to make sure they weren't in lockdown. I had been sent away more than once due to that.

It’s not unreasonable for a petty crime. 30 days in the county jail = $1500. That could be in line with a typical fine for many crimes. But that isn’t exactly what we are talking about here…

The issues I see here are two fold.

1)It’s obviously ridiculous to charge for time NOT served. The double and triple billing, as alleged, is govt corruption.

2)For longer sentences, more serious crimes, you have to question ability to pay. If a person comes out after a 20 year stint, the govt may as well charge them $1 Billion if they are going to bill nearly $1 million. It’s fruitless. A waste of everyone’s time. Most ex-cons are going to have nothing. These people need to be re-integrated into society after incarceration and if anything actually probably require further resources to re-integrate. Govt nonsense like this isn’t productive to that end.

Desantis is a socially awkward shithead who makes dipshit decisions to appease his low IQ base, nothing new here.

For those blaming DeSantis for this, you do realize he's not the one responsible for the law right? I'm still looking for exactly when this was passed, but I'm seeing references for it back to 2015 which predates his tenure as Governor.

That aside, the practice is definitely sketchy IMO. This isn't something states should be doing.

EDIT: Yahtzee! Found another reference to it back to 2004 from the FL Supreme Court so this one has been around for a long time. It was passed in 1994.

The problem with offloading any cost to the person imprisoned or jailed is that a) it makes it easier to arrest/jail/imprison anyone for anything if it doesnt cost the public anything or reduces the cost (and that doesnt even factor in the profit motive of the privatized prison industry) an b) this adds to the burden of anyone wishing to exercise their rights post-release, particularly voting. If we want jails and prisons, it should cost the public something, its a check on abuses. Rather than save money by being less draconian about petty crimes, it encourages expansion of arrests and jailing to feed the prison industry.

I found articles going back to 2004 about the $50 a day. But don't miss a chance to say something stupid if that is what you are all about.

I guess Florida has been backwards as hell for longer than we thought and this will tarnish the good name of Rick Scott, a popular figure around here

Actually looks like Chiles was the Governor of record when it was passed in 1994.

Makes sense. If I recall, they were looking for a strong position after Hillarycare blew up in their faces and created that massive turn in Congress. Clinton had already ticked off voters with the assault weapons ban and a tax increase.
